Should Matthew start deleting negative posts?

Is it time to be positive again and start deleting negative posts that offer no value to the forum?

I've been self employeed most of my working life. (I'm 44) In that time I've found that employees with negative attitudes try to breed their attitude. If you castrate the problem.....no more problem. :o ;)

Posts that expression ones opinions are not negative posts in my opinion. Posts that are derogatory or insulting to anyone  should be deleted without cause. But of course this is just my opinion. ;D

Joe,

You have hit the nail.  I want to be honest.  I voted to delete the post but in second thought I think if they are not insulting they should stay.  Libertarian principle.

        - Everyone should be free to do as they choose, so long as they don't infringe upon the equal freedom of others.
- Human interaction should be peaceful, voluntary, and honest. It is never acceptable to use physical force to achieve your goals.
The only time force is acceptable is when you are defending against force.
- The above principles must always be followed, with no exceptions, including government. Governments should not interfere with
the interactions and exchanges of peaceful people.

In this case use "Forum" instead of "Governments".

Delete the personal attacks on anyone, especially the admins and moderators, delete negative posts that are not constructive and warn the poster. This crap proliferates because it's allowed to go on and on.

Placeholders telling people a post or thread have been moved are imperative, or it will be thought to be deleted.

Moderators are important, but civility guidelines that are consistently enforced are even more important. Nip this crap in the bud. Being an 'open forum' doesn't mean anybody can say what they want, anymore than the First Amendment allows you to yell fire in a crowded theatre.

NO links to other forums. Mentions of things, IMO,are OK.

There is some baiting going on when people post here, linking to the content on another site, then justifying it by saying 'the content is only available on the other site.'

Delete the 'goodbye' posts, unless someone simply says they're either dying or are going away somewhere. Expressing their angst and regret is thinly veiled recruitment 90% of the time.

There are still over 4,000 members here. Establish clear rules, enforce them and let's get back to why we all came here in the first place.

Negative posts are ok sometimes, the hard part is determining the INTENT. Having moderated elsewhere I know that this is a no-win situation. If a post appears to be just aggressive or wanting to stir things up without valid reason then get rid of it. If it is negative about products (or another's opinion) but is instructive then leave it. Just ensure you keep focused on the forum's original purpose
and don't get distracted by other issues.

Jim,

I can agree with just about everything you posted except  the forth sentence from the bottoms. I've got a forum with a huge database of 8 years of info that I'd like to point to time from time just to save some keystrokes. Hey but if that becomes a no no I can deal with it.

Any post that violates the posting rules of the forum should be deleted, and the OP should be notified by PM and/or email.  Some "negative" posts will not violate the forum rules, and therefore should not be deleted.

To Dave and Joe, I post  here and SMC and usually illustrate my point with a picture and a URL reference to the applicable page.
I hope I can continue to do this.
...

John - I see nothing wrong with links, as long as they are not pure advertising, which yours are certainly not.

John,

IMO the difference is that you're not directing people to a forum.

It's too easy for one forum to troll for members by 'innocently' posting links to another forum. Not saying that's typically what people are doing, it's just not something that I think you should evaluate on a case by case basis.

If I was starting up a forum on widgets and I wanted to build a user community, the fastest route would be to get a link placed in a much larger, more established widget forum. I don't think it's being a control freak when you decide that can't happen.

Works for SMC, a forum I think is a model of great information and civility.

Jim

Dear Fog,

Does this forum allow free expression of opinion?
If the answer is yes? then I would like to speak

What I have to say is not harsh, and I will not attack anyone, I just want simple answers to simple questions.

Since I have posts in here, I feel I have this right.

so how bout it?

Mirko

Speaking as regular member, I'd say you have earned the right to an opinion, go ahead. I t least am willing to listen to anything

These questions go back to the few hours, before the lights went out here.

Matthew sent out a chained email, who remembers getting it?

how many hours/days did it ship out before the lock down?

Mirko

Keep stirring the pot, Mirko!  After all, it was your post yesterday which triggered the blow-out in Eiji's post ... perhaps that wasn't big/bad enough to suit your trouble-making objectives.

I voted earlier and didn't comment. Now I'll add my endorsement to the call. Moderators should delete any and all negative, abusive and argumentative posts, probably including my own.

Getting rid of the trouble-makers and their snide little posts would remove the need for anyone else to argue.

Mirko,

With all due respect I'd like a few answers myself:

If that other forum is so great, how come everyone bailing to go there keeps coming back to announce their leaving?

Some come back after simply dropping out of sight for weeks, seems they miss us or something.

But no one seems to actually leave, until heaved overboard by Matthew.

I'm not complaining, pointing fingers, or insulting anyone, just curious.

Another thing that puzzles me (I'm starting to sound like Andy Rooney, sorry) but you ever notice how there always seems to be way more communication going on than ever appears on the forum? It's like there's this secret club swapping messages, you never see the actual content, but you can see it's effect.

Wonder what's behind it all, it can't be simply that a bunch of the old ladies who delighted in stirring up trash and gossip decided to gang up on and attack this forum...

Or can it?

Now personally, I'm in favor of Matthew deleting any and all threads, posts, and whatever he feels the need to, 'cause there's been an awful lot of irrelevant junk posted that has nothing to do with Festool.

Out of curiosity I've visited that other forum, mostly I found lots of old names from here congratulating each other on finding it.

I'm glad the old ladies have found a home where they're welcome. Makes me feel warm inside to know that they found somewhere to congregate and chat amongst themselves.

of course, they're destined for a little backstabbing and talking behind each others backs, but that's to be expected.

The bright side to all this of course is that maybe this forum will get back to what it's here for.

Now what was it you were asking?

Chained emails? - never got one, been a member for a while, contributed lots, didn't get any emails from Matthew -

Gosh, you don't think he hates me do you? - leaving me out of the secret mailing list and everything....

Or maybe he just sent a message to the disruptive elements, Maybe (like some of the rest of us) he decided the fun and games have gone on long enough.

The man has shown the patience of a saint, putting up with this nonsense long enough.

no thanks, I don't need another Festool forum. there will be enough wisdom shared on this one, I'll stick it out here, things will tidy up, the old ladies will get bored, and more to the point soon they'll get distracted with a little infighting over there and leave us alone.

To everyone else wondering what the heck I'm rambling about, we had a little distracting discussion or two amongst some disgruntled members who decided Matthew shouldn't be able to run his forum the way he thinks best for the membership, and some of them behaved like some spoiled little kids for a while....

But it's getting better, they have a new playroom, soon they'll stop trashing ours.

Matthew, thanks for hanging in there, personally I'd have shut the sucker down out of frustration by now.

You have my support and respect for your continued efforts.

Good Morning,

Just to clarify my point of view about this...
Criticism is part of any honest forum (for example, discussing problems with a tool or service issues).  This is acceptable and necessary.
Personal attacks against someone -- no matter how many posts that person has -- are unacceptable.
Deliberate efforts to damage the forum community are unacceptable.

Thanks,
Matthew

These forums are just that, peoples opinions. I see no problem with giving your opinion on your experience. If you go to any forum to bash a member, mod or admin then you should be warned, next time your IP is banned.

You will always have a few who need to have some kind of stress in their life, and will go out of their way to irritate others.

I use these WWing forums for the most part for reviews, nothing gets me more than someone posting negative remarks about a tool or another members experience when they themselves have never done it or tried it.

Pops used to say to me, "you got nothing good to say, then don't say nothing" and "don't knock it til you try it"...

Sometimes negative is positive i.e. I was admittedly negative about peer rating which coincidently timed with alot of other aggravation. Now I'm positively glad that's over. So if you have any type of yea/nea you can't just delete the nea's. Let's keep it real; not too positive not too negative. I don't really know what's going on but it's certainly sad we lost so many good contributor's lately. I really can't understand why it came to this or that forum kinda sophmoric really. If this keeps up I may have to go back to work so please knock it off.
