Hi all

I tightened the collet nut all the way down without a bit installed. I had a hard time removing the collet after that. Each time I install a bit now, it is nigh on impossible to remove it again as it is completely stuck.

Any ideas how I might rectify this?

Thanks

Replace the collet?

Might check this...

I believe that collet has a ridge that captures it in the nut.  This allows the collet to force expand when you are loosening up the nut and makes bit insertion and removal easy.

Have you tried to separate them and clean them then assemble so it is captured in the nut before you screw in the router?  The collet should not be separate from the nut when you screw it in.  They should be captive.

It sounds like the collet is not locked into the nut. As you unscrew the nut the collet is pulled out to loosen it. If the nut and collet are separate then press the collet into the nut, you may hear a click as it engages and you may need to use a clamp to get it to engage.

Many thanks guys, that was precisely the issue! The collet clearly needs to be properly engaged with the collet nut prior to fitting to the spindle. It seems obvious now but where would I be only for this forum and the people here who know what they are talking about!
