Silly Question RE: Domino XL

Hi All,
Just got my Domino XL today.  Silly question....does it not come with even a sampling of 12mm tenons?

OK, that is what I thought.  Seems kinda cheap on Festool's part since it costs $1500.  It wouldn't hurt to throw in a handfull of dominos in the package.  But OK, off to the store (eventually).

I splurged on the two kits containing all the 700’s cutters and a wide selection on tenons.

There are a few sizes I need often and a few I need rarely, but I have them if needed. The two kits cost less than buying the individual pieces.

I did the same when I bought the 500 a long time ago. I do use every size cutter and tenon size so the kit really made sense for my usage.

Depending on what you are making with the XL, it may make sense to buy the XL 8/10 set but not the larger 12/14. If you are going to make something using 12's or 14's just buy the bit and the longer 12 or 14  stock; cut the tenons to the length you need. For me, I just haven't made larger projects which require a 12 or 14 mm Domino joint.

When I got XL, I picked up the "Domino XL Beech Wood Tenon, 12 x 26 x 100mm, 100 Piece" (p/n 498216) and the "Domino 500 Systainer Assortment - 5 Cutters, 1060 Domino Tenons" (p/n 498899) as I also got the "Small Mortise Kit for Festool Domino XL DF700".  So far I have only used the 12x26 Dominos as most of my projects are on the large side.

While I originally bought the "kits" with the tooling and the Domino assortments (including the Domino 500 kit since I have the Seneca adapter), I now by the tenon stock in the longer 750mm sticks as it's more cost effective and I always have the length I need for any job simply by making a few cuts after counting out how many I need. Short off cuts don't get throw out...I keep them for utility when short and odd lengths are sufficient for the task.

It is not so much that I won't buy the 12mm tenons, it's that I kinda wanted to play with my new toy RIGHT NOW!!!  [tongue] I have the Seneca SMK on the way and the 4-10 assortment on the way as well (from across the pond).

Why buy “from across the pond” with Highland Woodworking in town?

The answer is about a hundred bucks even with shipping. I bought my "assortments" with the tooling last year via Amazon.de for that reason.

Exactly.... in this case about $130 (the savings). FYI...amazon.de does not appear to ship to America for Festool.

Maybe they've changed their position recently but they've shipped to me on numerous occasions.....duty free.  [big grin]

I've purchased several Festool router bits and last year purchased the European SYS Power Hub. I was struck by how well packaged the items were.

That's never been the case for me (so far).  In fact, nearly every Amazon package from the UK or Germany has arrived with the box torn open and crushed (the boxes appear to be more flimsy that the one's we get ordering from Amazon US which only makes the matter worse).  Interior packing is non-existent (as is the case for most US orders).  I try to avoid ordering anything that could be fragile for this reason.  In contrast, Amazon Japan orders are packed in a thicker cardboard box, and the contents are plastic wrapped to a cardboard plate inside that box to prevent movement during transit or to thwart anyone that would try to open a corner of the box and steal part of the contents.  And that box usually arrives in impeccable condition as well.

Well that's unfortunate... [mad]...this is a photo of the double thickness box that the SYS Power Hub came in. And the SYS Power Hub itself came in it's own single thickness box. So crush space on the bottom and crush space on the top with triple thickness cardboard all around for protection.

I was so impressed with the packaging that I went to the extra effort to take some photos.  [jawdrop]

That looks a lot like Festool's packaging, not Amazon.  My 2019 Midi came in a box very similar to that right down to the offset handles on the sides of the box.

It certainly looks like Festool packaging, my SYS PH was boxed in the same box.
Although, rest of my Festool came in rather thin boxes. Strange that the SYS PH comes in such good wrapping, and much more expensive tools live hard, like they’ve had a home alone party inside their Systainer with paper thin card board boxes... Tools are misplaced and fairly scratched out of the box... not good. My other tools seems to have had a much better journey all the way to me...

They did at the time of my purchase, at least for accessories like this, but it may have changed since then.

Yeah...I meant to add...currently.  Sorry about that. :)

I bought a very lightly used XL earlier this year and the previous owner included a bunch of 12mm tenons he had.  Apparently he built one door with it and had lots of tenons left over.  I used a few recently on a bed.

I bought 14mm, 10mm, 8mm, XL cutters, the Seneca adapter, and 5mm and 6mm cutters.  All my cutters except the 12mm it came with are CMT purchased off Amazon.  The first 14mm broke but was quickly replaced (for free including shipping).  I used the 6mm today.  No issues.  I haven't purchased any other tenons.  My shop is small and the storage requirement for a full set of tenons would be significant.  I find it is very easy to use up a little scrap and make my own.  I have some 5mm, 6mm, and 8mm stock made up and will make more when I need to.  I also use slot mortises and wider tenons when I have the space for it.  I have made mortises over 5 inches long by repeatedly plunging the domino, about every 1/2 inch.

Curious how you do that since the front fence limits the plunge depth to the max of 75mm or so?
