This is just too Hard!!!
I tried to post this set of pictures early with poor results.
I wanted to attach a breadboard end to the side of a 33" high headboard and allow for seasonal wood movement.
Here's what I came up with.
I made a wide tenon out of maple and, using a simple jig, I cut a 10mm slot.

I cut an 8mm mortise 40mm deep and about 8mm wider than the tenon in the end of the headboard. I cut an intersecting 10mm slot next.
View attachment 2
The wide tenon slides into the 8mm mortise and a 10mm tenon locks it into place. The 10mm tenon will be cut flush later.

The other end of the wide tenon is attached to the breadboard end.
View attachment 4
The breadboard end is free to slide with wood movement.
