Any one else use rail dogs in an mft and suffer with them coming undone, and hence becoming sloppy after repeatedly lifting up and down to put stock under? Perhaps I need to somehow get them tighter in the first place, but not sure how!

Am I being thick?

Thanks

They can be sloppy, particularly after repeated use with them in the same place. I tried them for a magazine review and did not use them again. I returned them to the magazine editor and they gave them away to the first reader who sent in an email after publication.

You might like to look at other products that do a similar thing but better. I am sure that other people will advise you on the best options.

Maybe use them slightly differently with retainers to keep them on top of the table, with knobs below keeping them verticle?

As an alternative you could use this system:

The clips are based around the Parf Dog system and are sold by Axminster via the UJK Technology brand under the name "Dog Rail Clips".  I have two sets myself and find them very good, but have not used them for very long so do not know how they will last.  However, here in the UK they are quite cheap so replacing them would not really be an issue if they worked well.

Regards, Mark

For any one even vaguely interested I went with the parf dog and clip option - £20 very well spent :)

Those clips work pretty well but you really need to screw the dogs down from the bottom or tweaking the rail has a tendency to make them jump out the table.

Yes, the tall Parf Dogs should always be screwed in from underneath if you want perfect accuracy. If you are in a hurry and do not want things 100% then they can be just pushed in.

Which brand are you talking about?  I have some Qwas rail dogs which are OK, but really do like my Precision Rail Dogs. They work a charm and use them all the time (for well over 2 years now).

My process is as follows:
- Keep the rail dogs loose in the back of the rail
- Put them down in the table across the workpiece
- Reach under and tighten them up against the rail and make sure that the centering collar is centered in the rail

Cheers. Bryan.
