A week or so ago I took a few hours and about $2.50 in poplar to make a cutlery divider for my wife. I was sick of seeing the plastic on in the new drawers I had made and more importantly, really sick of hearing how ugly it was to her. ;^)

Here are a few pics (or else it didn't happen!):

Rough cut the wood with the Hitachi SCMS (sorry Kapex):

Line it up and mark for sliding dovetails:

Backer boards to keep the tearout down:

All sliding dovetails cut and dry fit:

Routed a roundover, sanding and sealing before glue up:

~CMS-VL/MFT/Incra LS/Precision Plate
~1400 under the table

Thanks for the great project idea.  Besides being a good use of scrap I imagine it'll pay a dividend each time the drawer is opened.

I really need to get on something like this. It's one of those things that aggravates me every time i open the drawer but never get around to making. What thickness did you plane the wood to?

It turned out very well btw.

A really nice job
You can now throw away that box of cotton balls  [big grin]

Great job! It's fun using up scrap for small but useful projects.  ;D

Thanks for the kind words everyone!  A fun quick project indeed... On the cheap!

I actually didn't plane it down at all. It was ½" "project" stock from a big box store. I had some line that I WAS going to plane down, but this matched the BB drawers I made from ⅝" thick BB.

Very nice, how did you achieve the centre radius, drum sander?

I laid it out on a piece of MDF, then just with my Carvex to get the profile (just used a circle draftsman set, until i found a nice profile) then used a drum sander to make it nice and smooth.  I used some fast tape to attach the poplar to it and used a template bearing bit to "rinse and repeat".

cheers.  Bryan.
