Looking to get a small metal vise for my Bosch PBD40 drill press
Any recommendations?

You don't need to spend a lot of money for a small vise. I have an older Craftsman machine vise that is rarely used but when needed it serves me well. What I do use most every time is a Kreg Automaxx clamp, or a Vise Grip style drill press clamp. The Kreg is awesome!

[member=71889]festal[/member] a bit more information would probably get you better suggestions.

Are you looking for a vise to hold smaller pieces or bigger or the whole range? For metal, or for everything?

Do you need it to adjust for angles or is flat ok?

Smaller metal pieces. Not for wood. Flat should be ok don’t think I need angles. The one you linked to seems pretty good.  Thank you

The Amazon link vise is more $$ than I was thinking, but I will add having the machined V's both vertical and horizontal are necessary.

I have a small Palmgren vise that I keep next to the drill press. I like that it can be secured to the drill press table and used on 4 of its sides. Here it's being held in place by a much larger Heinrich.

Yep something like this would work

The quality of these Groz vises was way beyond what I had expected.

Haven't needed to turn it sideways yet.

Otherwise, I'd haunt eBay (if you have the time/patience) and look for an old Craftsman or Palmgren like the one [member=44099]Cheese[/member] suggested.

Palmgren used to make vises and other tools for Sears and sold under
the Craftsman brand. They were identical except for the branding.

If you find an older Craftsman (over 15 years) it might be a Palmgren
in Craftsman clothing.

I have a 4" Groz milling vise and agree --- its pretty good.

All vises are not created equal.  A cheap drill press vise will have short gibs with excessive clearance and will tend to tip your workpiece when you clamp on it.  If you can afford the cost and size, a milling vise is a much better piece.

Is that a 3” or 4”? Definitely looking at grizzly just not sure which size to go with

I think it's a 4 because when you view the Amazon ad the 4" is the only 3-way version offered.

It is 4". Overall width of that model is right at 6" with the flanges.

Just a general comment, but vises are one tool I'm inclined to buy used. The Groz was an exception, but most other new vises turn me off. It's mostly the castings and oddly, screw threads, but adjustment gibs are another area where newer (read cheap imports) vises come up short.

This isn't a "gotta be made in USA to be any good" comment. I believe the Groz is made in India, I've been impressed with what I've seen of Indian manufacturing. A lot of the imports designed for machinists are really nice. For some reason most "drill press vices" I've seen are lacking IMHO, and any type of vise available locally has disappointed.

Sadly, I rearranged (cleared out) the shop this spring, to make room to actually work inside it, and haven't found homes for a beautiful 10" Morgan and a small bench vise. Trying to decide if I store them away for my heirs or put them back into circulation. First world problems.  [smile]

I use Grizzly quick vises.  I have their large and small versions as well as a very small one that I made in one of the evening adult shop classes our local high school tech school offers.
