Small Parts Shop Storage?

Parts picking trays, designed for production lines, are rugged and reasonably priced.  They nest in various sizes and have lids available.  There are many  sources for these.  I am only familiar with Schaefer Systems.  But I don't think you will be able to buy directly from them.  They sell  mostly to automotive manufacturers.  But they have resellers.  And competitors.

Grainger carries some of their products.  They have large trays that can nest several smaller trays.  And lids.

Hi Seth - I was hoping to find a stationary cabinet (or one on wheels) with shallow drawers that will hold standard parts organizers (like the ones sold at Lowes or Home Depot, but proprietary is ok too). The organizers would be mobile - as in - lift out of the drawer and throw in my truck - they would also have a tight fitting lid that keeps stuff in it's own compartment.

Basically - the same as a sys-az cabinet - but with drawers large enough to lay a big organizer in it.

I DON'T want to pull an organizer out of a pile, or slide out of a rack, then take to another surface to open. It's too cumbersome to get a couple screws, bolts, etc.

My simple goal is to slide out a drawer, open an organizer, get what I want from it, close it, and slide the drawer back in. I currently have a pile of filled organizers on a wood shelf, and the one I need is always near the bottom - hence my problem.

I'm pretty sure I'm just going to build a melamine or plywood LR32 cabinet, attach drawer slides, build some 1" to 1 1/2" deep drawers, and stick the organizers in them.

Everything suggested so far either doesn't fit my needs OR gets close but is ridiculously priced. I was hoping one of the new "systems" being made by several manufacturers might work - but they all seem to be designed as mobile stacked tool and/or organizer carriers. The couple that have drawers are crazy priced "tool-boxes".

Thanx

I believe you want this:https://www.auer-packaging.com/us/en/Insert-boxes-Insert-Euro-containers.html?alias=875

(optionally) placed in this:https://www.auer-packaging.com/us/en/Euro-containers-solid/EG-6475-HG.html

I would strongly advise having only the small inserts removable though. Had it and hated it. Much better to have sliding semi-drawers with trays with inserts in them. When needed, the trays/containers are stackable, so I can just place them one on other, put a lid, and there I go with my complete screw assortment with me.

Also in shop, at times I want to take the whole tray out when I am not sure what screws will be needed. So you want both to be able to take the whole "tray/drawer" and to also be able to take the individual inserts with just the items you need.

No idea what is available at your place, but Auer seems to ship globally, so may be worth a try. Or using as a reference for local supplier stuff.

If I understand, you want a cabinet that will stay in the shop.
It will have pull-out trays via full extension slides.
You’ll place a parts organizer with tight locking lid on each tray.
You’ll pull whichever organizers the job requires to take to the truck.

Your plan to make a cabinet is what most people do. As long as it stays in the shop melamine will do. If  the cabinet gets loaded on the truck it should be made of plywood.

There are lots of parts organizers that will be suitable. Most of them stack neatly and many lock together. Milwaukee and Dewalt are good. At the lower cost end HD has Huskey and Ridgid and recently Ryobi has come out with something similar.

Small parts storage has always been expensive.  All the systems we see now are efforts to cheapen the original Stanley-Vidmar Systems cabinets.  (It is now just “Vidmar Systems”).  Even used these are over $3,000.00 and new probably $5,000 to $8,000.

Everything we see now are efforts to make the Vidmar cabinets but at affordable costs.

When they were Stanley, they were a customer of ours.  The sold out to a German company and were told that “Nothing would change”.  The next time I visited the vacuums were no longer Hoover, but Hermes.  They typewriters were AEG and not IBM, and the phones were German too.  But one thing never changed:  They were expensive.

If you want an aspirational organization system, that’s where to look.

Clark, if you are going the DIY route look at Schaller for the bins. Lots of size options you can mix/match.

I started with a couple 24" wide base cabinets filled with these until I ran out of floor space in the shop and transitioned over to some cheap HF bin cases. I don't have the luxury of keeping them low so whenever I need anything I have to bring the container down, but it works for me. My only regret is going cheap with HF and not paying the extra $10/each to get better quality cases.

I still use them in my office/workroom for small stuff:

Replaced with overhead storage in the shop:

EDIT: Just read down and noticed Ron already suggested Schaller...  [doh]

Matt, imagine what it does to me... 10#'s of s%!# in a 5-pound sack.

FWIW, I've spent the past few months doing a major de-cluttering, it's getting better. I finally stopped and asked myself if I really needed everything that was crammed in there. Sadly, my new, prized Morgan vise is currently homeless.

Yeah - this is my initial re-effort to get every like kind object grouped in like kind places. Will also require serious soul searching about what to keep. If I go Marie Kando and only keep what I LOVE - I'll need a second building!

Better still is to only keep what has been needed or used in the last "X" amount of time. With that approach I should be storing significantly less.

Really think I'm gonna start by building shallow drawers in a tower on wheels and using the big box store organizers with tight sealing lids. Seems easiest and most cost friendly to get what I need quickly. I already own most of the organizers that I need.

Thanx Again!!
