Small shop storage

Been teaching myself cabinetry by building some shop storage. I started with a mitre station.

The carcass is 18mm ply built using Dadoes and rabbets off the table saw.

The top is scrap melamine benchtop edged with leftover brushbox floorboards from a neighbours Reno.

The drawers are 18mm ply mitred and dominoed with full extension soft close slides.

The doors are rail and stile using the brushbox flooring and scrap ply. The ply sits in a 6mm dado off the table saw. Used Blum hinges.

Here’s a nice tip. If you rip off the tongue and groove from hardwood flooring like this:

You are left with a perfect bead for your rail and stile doors:

Should be finished tomorrow.

It’s 4m x 5.5m. The mitre station is across the short wall.

The left cabinets are 2 x 600mm, the right is 1 x 600mm. The saw station is 750mm which is wide enough to mitre the saw 60 degrees left and 45 degrees right. Overall 2550mm, with a sink to the left and my dust collector to the right which uses the whole 4m wall.

Ok all finished today. Doors have come up nice with a coat of Osmo.

What have I learned?

Need to pick the correct hinges. I now understand what full overlay, half overlay etc means. I have a few exposed ply edges because I didn’t understand this before I bought the hinges. Also had to trim 5mm off the last door for the same reason.

Also learned that you have to glue in the magnets the right way around otherwise they push the door open rather than pulling it shut!

Anyway all up pretty nice. The wife said I’m allowed to have a go inside the house now!

the idea of using T&G flooring material off-cuts for door frames is appreciated.

About learning: over  the years I have come to realize that my mistakes are not  something negative at all. I have noticed how much better I seem to learn and retain those lessons than formal book or classroom learning.

For newcomers to woodworking we can all help by setting expectations that one should not expect pro-like results right out of the box with a new tool or method. Instead embark on a deliberate round of practice operations on non-critical material  or projects.

Keep posting with pictures on the FOG!
