I look at the Festool portable planer every time I go to Edensaw in Port Townsend, pick it up, admire it and all that, but  --

It just seems too big and bulky for me.

So while I was doing a Google on the Bosch I came across this:

If I am reading this right, it looks like Festool is introducing a smaller planer.  Is that true?  If so, I should wait awhile before I just go out and buy a Bosch.

i have the "one handed planer" or ehl65, i assume this is what your talking about, and its roody great! the ts and guide has made my planers almost redundant these days but when i do need one the 65 is always with me.... long gone is my big dewalt

That sounds as though it's the HL850E. which is the only electric planer marketed by Festool in the USA.

Outside the USA, as well as the HL850E Festool also market a smaller planer called the EHL65E. I assume that this is the planer that is being discussed on the Tools of the Trade website.

The manual is available for this smaller machine, plus a review. I have a Bosch planer at the moment, so I'm afraid that I can't offer any first-hand advice or comparisons between the two machines.

Hopefully FOG members outside the USA will add to w00dbutcheruk's comments about the EHL65E.
