I lived in Northern Michigan for 20 years and learned a couple things after being trapped for up to 7 days before.
First - stay home! Enjoy it.
Second- fire up the wood stove and get the wood supply covered
Third - be sure you stocked up on the beverages of choice - alcohol based of course
Forth - make the kids move the snow, tell them it is fun!
Fifth - beware! Somehow about 9 months later the stork shows up with little bundles of "joy"!!
Sixth- kill the cable / satellite for a day or two and enjoy some real quality family time. So very rare these days.
Seventh - read a book. Heavy snow has this incredible quality as a sound deadener and makes quiet time really mean something.

Oh and enjoy the alcohol!
Now I fully expect Bob will spend his time counting Systainers while drinking his wine.

My dogs really loved the deep snow. Had to drag them back in the house. Used to go out in the woods and make trails with the kids. If you can, think about the birds as they will be really struggling trying to find food.

Peter - love it! Would it be cruel to make a four year old shovel snow? He just learned how to make a snowman with daddy. I completely agree - I happen to like it when the cable and internet goes down - makes for the best family time. To all my friends in the Northeast - we can't stop the snow from coming, we may as well make the best of it and get some good quality time with our families!

  Hey Pete,

Good  list, except for the higlighted # 5. No way, Jose. At my age, there can only be one persdon in diapers in the house. [scared] [big grin] Lord, help me.  KIDDING.

Actually, will be tending to business most of the day, got the wood ready for the fireplace, gas for the snow blower and will be picking up a couple of bottles of red.
Agree, nice family time.

Bob

;-)
Hey Bob, you are still very young.
Well the famous former governor of Louisiana will be 85 in August, a few months before his 32 year old wife is expected to give birth!!! Oh and they are starting their own reality show - The Governor's Wife. Only in Louisiana.

Strangely no mention of Scotch in this thread  ;)

Speaking of Scotch, I heard a rumor that perhaps someone from across the pond could answer.

I heard that Johnnie Walker Blue Label may be discontinued soon.  Anyone have some info on this?

I will personally be relaxing with some Macallan 15 year  ;D

Glenn Fiddich 15 year guy.  Sadly my roommate just grabbed a bottle of Glennamurang (sp?) before the snow got too bad.  I'll make due.  I'm sacked up here with a broken ankle.  Free scotch delivered to me.  Can't be too choosy right?

At least you have a good excuse for why you can't help shovel  ;)

Where in Northern Michigan - not going to see much more snow than what we get in the Keweenaw.

I lived in Traverse City. We had several storms over that time with major winds. First was the winter of 77-78 with a 36" snow fall and winds of about 35. Was selling cars and had a drift from the top of the 2 story VW building to the top of the 1 story Toyota building with lots of cars buried. We damaged a few digging them out. Had some pics of driving them around with 10 feet or so of snow on top. Really cool. Crews got major roads open within 2 days.

Second storm was 4 years later I believe. Was living by Bass Lake and storm had really high winds. Drifted the road closed. Took 7 days before the county came and dug it out with front end loaders.

Now these snows are nothing compared to what the upper peninsula would get! Had some nephews going to school at Michigan Tech and they would tunnel out to the road from their front door.

Well global warming has changed most of that over the last 10 years or so for the Traverse City area at least. Snow falls are greatly reduced. While I used to have to remove the snow off the roof at least twice a winter, now nobody bothers with that.

The tragic oversight was letting your whisky (or whiskey, depending) stock reach a dangerously low level...  [scared]

Nothing but rain and wind here so far, so (hopefully) no shoveling in our immediate future. More opportunity to sip and stare out the windows.  [big grin]

Cheers!
