So you want to be a cabinet maker

That ones not bad, you need to look up the "so you want to be an architect" on youtube.  I laughed so hard it hurt.

It's a Architecture undergrad intern:

"I will be an architect and design grand buildings that will be in magazines, everyone will love me"

"You will be chained to a desk drafting commercial cubicle details for minimum wage untill your eyes bleed"

While I agree with the premise there are some people that can make it happen.  Kreg seems to be on his way to proving this video wrong, from handyman to custom build-in specialist.

Earl,

At least Kreg has something good to fall back on if things change for the worse.  Backup plans are good.   [wink]

That video is extremely comical and holds some merit too. But a good laugh none the less!

Been in this business for 20 years. I can't wait till I can "pick my own hours". Great post by the way. So often sad but true.

Don't be silly Tim, you get to pick any 12-16 hours of the day you want to work. [big grin]

Your expertise and success notwithstanding Brice, I think Kreg's success is a great example of how (personal) marketing creates opportunity. That "Honeydo" branding and the branding on side truck is/was brilliant! I would copy it but I couldn't pull it off.  To me it seems as though Kreg works as hard building cabinets as he does promoting it (this is hard work and never ends) and I believe that's part of the reason why he's successful. It doesn't hurt that his enthusiasm is infectious, I can see why folks want to buy from him.

I am as guilty of lofty ambitions as anyone, (like the guy in the video) but getting off my ass and doing shit I don't like doing is way harder.

This seems to point to the fact that most professions and occupations could be parodied the same way, although I would hate to even try to make a living as a journalist these days. That is an occupation that seems to be declining (jobs) faster than any other.

i'd have to take a look at kreg's books to see how successful he really might be. quality and nice work is important but after all it is a profession for many of us. so just because it looks like someone is really doing great from job photo's and video does not mean he is making a good profit and succeeding as much as you may think from the outside. financially speaking what 1 man might consider financial success another might consider peanuts. lol

Deja voo, I think I've had that conversation before. How true is that?

Me too....even with myself sometimes.

Check out the other video, "I would like to hire a custom cabinet maker"   I've had that conversation too.  Of course not exactly as played out.  A lot of "speaking of the mind" takes place and you know that's most likely what is going on in your head when you're there.

Well, that was, unfortunately, right on these days.  My experience over the last two years, with one notable exception, is that people think a reasonable profit is out of the question.  They don't want to pay.

Yep, I'm a cabinetmaker too, but do about one significant job per month. The bills are paid by all the handyman work in between. Thankfully, I like variety...and eating.

The author deserves some kind of award for this.... he probably will have a more profitable future in producing these videos vs. woodworking  :-)

The funniest line in the other video, IMO, is

"a person with any dignity would leave this conversation, but desperation is clouding my judgement"....

How true is this!!!

The only saving grace is, almost every field is experiencing these same issues.... the contracting business is not only beaten down by the recession, but also the reduced new housing starts, which forces more workers into the rehab market.  A double dose of downer  :-(

HA!!!  The only hours you get to choose are the hours when you do your paperwork, i.e., billing, ordering, bill paying, etc.

[smile]

Hmmmmmm.  I think I'll stay in the insurance business.  Woodworking is fun to me since it's a hobby.  Anything you have to make a living at, no matter how much fun as a hobby, can turn out to be very stressful to say the least.  I sell Adirondack chairs as a very part time endeavor and it's still fun, however, I do realize it could become a chore in a hurry if I really needed to make money at it.
