Hi guys,

I ended up buying 6 of the official 2010 world cup balls. I was thinking i could make a nice little display for it with a battery operated turn table base.
I put together these renderings to get an idea of what it could look like. I actually spent more time modeling the soccer ball then i did on the cabinet
but it all looks pretty good. PS ( I WANT A FESTOOL SOCCER BALL PETER SO MAKE IT HAPPEN )  [tongue]

I'd buy one of those. That is an awesome soccer ball.

Haha thanks Chris, thats why im hinting at Peter to get hold of hit festool contacts. If you didnt know, Peter is a moderator on the FOG and is in the process of getting a prototype FOGtainer made up.

I think this has been asked before but what do you use for your renderings. They are 1st rate!

Wayne,

That rendering is incredible!  No need to make a ball if you can just render it instead!

I believe that Wayne uses Autodesk 3D Max.  I asked him many questions while he and Jonathan were doing the Fogtainer renderings.  I personally find it fascinating that he taught himself the program in a little over a year in his spare time.

Hi Tom

i just use plain old 3dmax 9 for all my modeling and renderings.......i just need a faster pc now because renderings just take way to long.

Hi Guys

I just did a slight remodel of the display case and corrected grain orientation. I also thought festool blue would work better on the ball.

Wayne,

I am going to hire you to do renderings for me.  I pay you, the customer orders the work done.  Then I piddle around and put a large size rendering in their home.  It is so real they love it.  I collect my check and go on to the next project.

Seriously,  again your work is amazing.  Even more amazing in my mind is that you self-critique your work and work towards being even better.

Love your spirit and talent!  [thumbs up] [thumbs up] [thumbs up]

Peter,

Your to kind lol, I actually wouldnt mind just doing renderings like this for a living......but maybe after a couple of weeks im sure i would get itchy fingers for the workshop again.

Wayne,

That's nice work!
A small suggestion however:  You may want to tone down the contrast in the wood a little bit, and adjust the lighting position.
Why is that? The contrast in the wood makes for a nice figure, but the fact that the wood "model" is strictly concentric in nature ( though somewhat randomly dispersed in color ) is "brought to the light" ( pardon the pun ) and that makes it look just a bit artificial. Re. the lighting position: it's the play of light in the seams of the soccerball that really drives the photorealistic appearance in the white ball. To regain that effect in the darker color, you could alter the lighting position to bring out the effect of highlighting the seams. It may be necessary to change the "gloss" of the ball (don't know what the 3DS max term is)

Please believe me: this is not meant as criticism, it's a very nice piece of work indeed!! But being exposed to endless renderings in a former job, I couldn't help noticing the step-back in realism in your last rendering ( well, from my POV anyway ) where there's ample room for great phororealism. Try it, you might like it.

Regards,

Job

Wayne, I agree with the above. The wood in the first image (with the white ball) whilst quite 'uninteresting' in terms of the contrast of the grain, looks far more realistic than this latest one. And with the seams on the ball, too.

So, when will we see the real one?  [poke]

JRB

Edit: Looking at it again, I think the new ball is just too dark. How about 'systainer grey' for the hexagonal panels, and then the pentagonal panels in blue and the printed detailing in green (or vice-versa)?

All points taken, I  think kicking up the gloss on the blue ball will help the light pick up the highlights better. Ive decided not to use rosewood on the final product, i will be using sapele mahogany with a mahogany stain. I'll take in the suggestions and see if i can come up with what would be more of a final product look. Thanks guys.

One thing that really does help with photorealistic rendering is using the photometric lighting, im using mr lighting now. The problem i have have with photometric light is i have to have the setting so high to get ride of graining on reflections that it would take 10 times longer to render. When i do eventually upgrade my rig im sure i could render 20 times faster.

Wayne,

Another BTW: the fact that you managed to slip a tiny "misfit" into the patterns on the panels vs. each other seriously adds to the realism.
It "distorts" the geometric pattern ever-so-little and subconsciously that makes it more "lifelike".
Adding a little wavy distortion to the edges of the panels ( suggesting stitches ) may or may not enhance the appearance - you'll have to try and see.

Please keep up the beautiful work !

I agree the misfit does add to it, but to be honest i didnt intend on it in the beginning. When i lined them up on the model they lined up alot closer but when rendered the maps didnt come out as they looked on the model. After seeing the render though i did think it looked more realistic that way, So i just left it that way

Well the world cup starts here on the 11th of june so i would hope to have these units done while we have has many tourists here as possible. Im hoping to take alot of pictures throughout the building process.

Ok, so i did some remapping and added some bump maps. I think this is pretty much as close as im going to get to the final product.
