Hey Guys,  The wife would like a new L - Shaped desk built, what kind of solid surface material is available in 3/4"?  I'd like something that I can buy in 4x8' and cut the L- Shape in one piece.  Any suggestions on material and where I can buy it in Northern California?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Jack

Over the pond here, we have a product which is 25mm thick, but is limited on the choice of colours to 10 and 650mm wide.

As far as I am aware that supplier only has it due to them asking a manufacturer to make it for them also.

Over here in the UK, 8 x 4 sheets of S/S are not available - I know why they'd way a flippin tonne.

Hopefully someone a bit closer to you will be able to shed a little more light on sourcing.

Take a look at Richlite, Jack.

It mills like wood, is dimensionally stable (really low COTE), and is sustainable.

Thanks Tom,  I'll see if I can find a supplier around here.

A full sheet of GetaCore used to be 4050 x 1250, at 12mm thick.

They've changed it since I left, it's now only 10mm thick and I have no idea what the sheet size is...

One nice thing about PaperStone is that they've got a website where they sell their "rejects", which run the gamut from warped/blistered, to visual defects, to off-sizes.  If the off-sizes work for you, then it might be a great deal:

Of course, you'd need to figure on shipping - definitely a consideration for a large sheet.

When you cut the L shape, be sure to radius the inside corner no tighter than 1-1/2" to prevent stress cracking at the inside corner.

Also check out Avonite, a competitor to Corian. The only come in 12MM (or some 6mm) thickness, but are easily bonded to make a much thicker-appearing edge. I used them because they were available through my distributor without having to go through their expensive certification program.

NorCal area is larger than many states, but if you're near Sacramento these folks have options and they sell to mere mortals, have bought from them several times

Thanks Paul,

I am close enough to Sacramento to make a trip up that way.

Paul,

Did you buy a sheet or sheets of solid material or a finished top from them?  I called and they said that they will get back to me with a price for a sheet.

My purchases there have been laminate sheets for various projects, I knew they also sold solid surface products so I mentioned them here. They do fabrication but also sell the materials, at least they did up to about a year or so ago which was the last time I needed some laminate.

I haven't looked through the links others have posted, but I doubt you'll find a 8' x 4' sheet of solid surface material. Have you felt the weight of a sheet! I use 760mm x 3.6M sheets regularly, and I can't pick one up by myself, it simply weighs a tonne, and also flexi's too much under its own weight.
At 3/4" thick it will need a lot of additional support again to stop it flexing under its own weight.

I love working with Corian, you can incorporate a reinforced frame inside the laminated sheets of corian to add additional support, but again, you'll never be able to lift the top by yourself.
