A while ago I met a carpenter (not very good carpenter though) he had this large tool which once set up was amazing!  It took a little bit of setting up but man it was quick! Bang mortice look done lift of door drop on next tighten and turn this handle and it would slowly move the tool up and down and in every time it had gone up and down until it reached the depth setting. bang another one done! I was impressed!  I was going to buy one! unfortunately they are not so easy to get hold off! Also the price tag is £1000.  Well the other day I came across something which is similar but smaller lighter and a lot less working out and fiddly parts also using a drill to operate!

I was wondering if any one has used one before it looks good and if I was going to do more than 3 doors on a job it would be a tool worth having as it doesnt look like it takes long to set-up. Unlike the big beast which takes a bit of time setting up I would want to be doing at least 10 doors even 15 to be bothered to get it out off the van you see.

Sorry!  This tool this carpenter had is a kinda like a large router attached to two rails and has a large bar going up which hooks on top of the door which takes the weight and is  adjustable so you can lower or raise your mortise lock so you can move from door to door and keep all the looks at the same height.  Then you have this double cutter the router which you can adjust so the first one is for the mortice and then second is for your face plate you can move it to allow for deeper face plate or mortice.  You can have to set how deep the machine will actually go for it to stop and how tall the mortice lock has to be once all this is setup  simply turning thise large handle round moves this mechanism up and down which in turn moves the router up and down and very cycle the router will plunge slightly deeper untill it has reached its stopping point.  You simply remove the to tool loosening the clamps and drop it onto the next door and drill out the next mortice lock and you just keep going but the router is very powerfull so you can really give the handle some turning so it plunges and goes up and down quickly and it takes 8 seconds to cut out a large mortice lock out in oak door.

It's a Heavy Duty Door Lock Mortiser.  They typically go for over a thousand dollars.  Specialized tool, but if you have to mortise a lot of door locks, it's the cat's meow.

A fellow from another forum last year got one at an estate sale for $27, and he didn't even know what it was either.

Here's one from Porter Cable.

Funny really! I went to my local dealer 2 day!  To get a new hand saw and bits and bobs!  He said I got something you will like!  I was like what I bet its crap!  He said fallow me!   I tell ya I cant believe it what he showed me!  He showed me the Souber DBB!  I was like  [eek] NOOO way man I just put a topic on FOG about this! Well I asked how much he said £115inc  I said axminster sells it for £109inc he said fine!  So I bought one! Its only £100 not the end of the world if its not as good as it makes out to be but could be a real time saver if it is good!

Answer to your question ROB!

1. Router is heavy and its another tool to carry onto the job and need power and leads

2. A router takes along time to set up. Like centring the router to the door and you have to attach the edge guides and everything its hassle. If the guide are to tight they wont move easily and to loose you end up slightly bigger hole and doing like 10 doors their might be a slight variation in the doors.

3. Your doing the route-ring with the door on its side which is fine but its much harder doing it when the door is swinging with a router

4. The router makes alot of noise!

5. You need to make some sort of jig with it to have a stop so you don't router to far

6. You have to plunge to router all the time so turn the knob to tighten then release to plung abit more then tighten  time consuming.

Souber DBB

1. Self centres

2. I already have a drill on me which you just attach to the Souber DBB

3. Its small and I can just have it in my tool bag with my chisels and hammer and stuff.

4. Easily removed from door to door.

5. Has stops so you can just go for it with out worrying if your going to cut it to big.

6. Not as noisy with a drill!

the virutex tools are real good. my mate picked up a lipping planer for £50 out the add mag, ace bit of kit when setup

Just one picture of the tool!

Also a video!

Like most people or maybe just me I dont read instructions! As you can see in the video! I had the drill on slow first and I soon realised it was not cutting very well! As you can see in the video I stopped and turned the drill to higher speed! It worked much better but still not aswell as I would of liked!

By the way the video is the first time I used the tool it had just come out of the box and I thought I would film my first attempt at using the tool! I will do another video but with a different drill because when I looked at the instructions it says use a drill with a rpm of 2000/3000  well the drill I was using only goes up to 980rpm oops! So it was a unfair test really! But it shows that it will still work with a slower spinning drill just not as good of course.

I think its a well worth the price it did not take me long to align the bit with the to lines I had drawn I was a bit off with the bottom one but I didnt want my head in the video so I didn't bend down to make sure it was on the line. It has a second stop which will allow me to keep  the width of the tool at the same distance for the next door so I would only need to align the bottom and the top will be in the same place.

Souber DBB

My trail ran out on this other converter! So I used this one!

Also remember I am using the wrong drill the RPM is to slow 980 I need 2000-3000 rpm.

Sorry Rob I have not done a review yet!

I am waiting on this new drill I have ordered!  I have looked around and found this drill is the best drill for this tool

As it says in the Manual you need a drill with 750 -800 watts motor and its needs a RPM of 2000-3000

Well this Milwaukee is 750watts and spins at 2200rpm
http://www.milwaukeetool.co.uk/int/uk/uk_products.nsf/vwToolsLink/7D804CDF7095E8BFC12577D00045EA98?OpenDocument&nav1=pro

I like this drill because its kinda like a angle drill so I can use if to other types of jobs not just for this DBB jig but I mainly like this drill because how you hold it it will be alot easier to use with the DBB Souber because your closer to the door unlike a normal Pistol grip drill you would be further away and have less control and less comfort to your wrist.

I did have a look at this other Milwueakee drill it has 8amp I think that is 750-800watts for UK? and has a RPM of 0-2,800 RPM as it has more power and spins closer to 3000 which must be better as the manual says 2000-3000 so I rather be hitting the 3000 I would like this drill.  Also this drill is small in length even though it is a pistol grip type of drill I think because if being short in length would be okay to use BUT  the problem is they dont sell this one in the UK only USA

looks like a good little tool, shame you are having to but a new drill (not [big grin])

if you was to do the face plate would you need to take off and re align the jig or is there some builtin adjstment?
id love to see it in action on hardwood or a firedoor when you gt your shiney new drill [tongue]
