Since my cabinet maker moved i have been building cabinetry for my clients, although not my main source of income and i rather be focusing on AV its been nice and its a nice change from dealing with wires and HDMI issues day in and day out. I am doing enough volume to warrant signing up with Fessenden Hall (sheetgoods/cabinet supplier) and got my approval today! I now need a good source for solid cherry/mahogany at a decent price, preferably 4/12 ,16/4,4/4 etc Currently purchasing online and from a local cabinet supplier at full retail  [eek]

Thanks for any help!

Hi,
Here's a place you might want to check out in Richboro PA.  It's in Bucks County PA.  I'm not sure where you're at in South Jersey, Eastern PA but this might work for you.  It's a farm that also sells lumber that they saw.  I believe the farm and lumber operation is the same business but I'm not sure.  My recollection (I was last there about 12 years ago) was that prices were extremely reasonable but the wood is not kiln dried.  Species vary depending on what they've cut recently but they definitely had cherry.
I took a look on google maps and you can still see the saw mill sign next to the barn.

Here's the info
Bryan's Farm
Fruit & Vegetable Store
2032 2nd Street Pike
Richboro, PA 18954-2014
Phone (215) 598-3206

Hope this helps.  Let me know how it goes.
All the best,
John

If you want the good stuff, there's nobody better than Hearne Hardwoods in Oxford, PA

Hearne is great, but Delaware County Supply in Boothwyn may be a much closer source.  Worth giving them a call at least.

Regards,

John

Howdy, I am down in Brigantine and have the same trouble finding materials. Unfortunately I am not in the Fess-Hall category, getting quality plywood is a major problem.

Another source nearer the shore is South Jersey Lumberman, Steve's primary business is teak for the yacht builders but he also stocks 10-12 species of furniture lumber. Locate right off 50 @ Exit 17 of the expressway:

http://www.sjlumbermans.com/

There is a price list posted online, I did notice his cherry was $8/BF.  [eek]  Steve also carries 4 species of mahogany.

I have been planning a run out to Industrial Plywood in Reading some day, their pre-finished 3/4 maple was around $60/sheet last time I checked. Since it is a full day trip I have held off until I need enough material to justify it and I can devise a place to store it. They also sell pre-cut/milled rails/stiles:

Where is your location around the shore?

Why can't you get an account with fes hall? Are you not a business? I openly told them that I only do one off cabinets here there, more so since my cabinet maker moved and they were fine with it, all they cared about was whether or not I was a criminal and I had a tax I'd number!

I did some sub contracting work for Viking in new Gretna for a summer doing the av, they had two incredible craftsmen that would come up from Florida to do the one off teak decking, some of the most gorgeous workmanship work I've ever seen. When I was there we struck up a conversation and I tried telling him about festool but he's a black and yellow guy [scared]

I live in glassboro, about 45 minutes from AC but my office is in conshohocken pa close to king of Prussia. So many of my customers own shore homes I'm primarily working down there during the summer months, do a ton of work in oc,lbi,Avalon and a bit in cape may, will even go up to Monmouth! I do a decent amount of commercial in AC and I have a fairly large project coming up in brigantine!

Thanks for the info :) if there is something that you need from fes hall and I'm in the area I would be happy to pick some sheet goods up and drop them off for you while I'm in the area!

Brendon,

Thanks for the offer. I am not a business, just semi-advanced DIY with a taste for lime-green.  [big grin]

I had previously heard that Fess-Hall required customers to be full-fledged cabinet shops and even inspected the shop prior to opening accounts.  My wife does operate an interior design business, and has a resale #. I may see if they will accept that. Based on the Cherry pricing below from Mr. Roberts I may have to run over there this Saturday and see what I "need".

My old office was in Wayne PA (Chesterbrook), back then we lived in Yardley. We moved here full time about 3 years ago. Before then I worked the Philly suburbs from Bucks to Delco, commercial real estate (industrial) sales and leasing. KOP was smack in the middle of my hunting grounds. Now I am technically based in Mt. Laurel, but in reality I have been to that office 3 times in 3 years (as it involves putting on long pants and shoes...), I mostly work from home or I am on the road. I do still get out to Reading 2-3 times a month for client meetings.

Hopefully we will cross paths sometime. Sounds like there may be enough Philly-centric FOGers to hold a get-together sometime.

Since I am sure that a lot of non professionals will also take a look at this thread I would highly recommend any woodworker to visit Spacht Sawmill which is near Norristown PA.  It is a 1950's era circular saw mill run by a very personable husband and wife pair and I think it is the coolest place to go buy wood.  It is kind of like getting in a time machine.  They are a pretty small operation however and I don't think they do wholesale.  I thought their selection was good - they just dont always have thousands of BF for everything.

Another that has not been mentioned is Willard Brothers in Trenton - which is of course more central Jersey but worth the trip.

Hearne is definitely an impressive place.  It is worth it to check out the inside of office building they had built next to the main lumber barn.  One of the employees took me over to look at it just before it was finished. It was made of the same beautiful and exotic woods that they have for sale - and each room featured different species.  I can't imagine how much it cost!  They also had a baby elephant statue carved out of Ironwood.  I should try to dig up a picture...

RMW nice to know there is another corporate real estate broker in NJ, here on the FOG.  There are 2 places in central NJ that aren't bad, the first is JH Monteath and the other is US Mahogany.  Monteath has good supply of hardwood and plywood, they also have a huge molding section.  US Mahogany is smaller selection but good to deal with.  Every Thanksgiving they hold their annual hardwood sale.  Probably to far for South Jersey guys.  I have never tried it, but have heard purchasing on the web you get some good material.

Howdy Wooden Skye, good to meet you.

Unfortunately those 2 sources are 100 miles from me. I sometimes get up that way on other business, hopefully I can check them out some day. It's funny, back when I lived in Nevada with its wide-open spaces 100 miles seemed like a LONG way to drive. Now that I am on the east coast 100 miles is sometimes just a long-ish errand. I recall one whirlwind business trip starting in Providence RI then thru MA/CT/NY/NJ&PA before the day was over with 3-4 stops along the way. It was only 250 miles +/- and 6 states. AND I doubt I ever got over 1,500' in elevation, which is weird after living in high-desert for so long.

I did make it to Mr. Roberts the day before the sale ended, grabbed some very nice 4/4 Cherry for < $4/BF. They had some of the most stunning Paduka I have ever seen for around $10/BF, some over 12" wide. 3-4 species of mahogany in very wide planks, 4/4 poplar for

Don't know what part of South Jersey your in but if Mr Roberts is close your in my area . If you need figured woods like curly maple and cherry give me shout , I always have some extra and would be happy to pass my deals on to you .  My shop is in South Jersey as well .  I get domestic hardwoods too but don't keep much on hand .

My father and I started milling lumber a couple years ago.  We have a decent selection of AD cherry from 5/4 - 16/4.  Prices are normally around $4 a bf for cherry no matter the size or thickness.  If you buy green lumber we can really give you a great deal.    We also cut live edge slabs up to 60" wide.  Biggest we have in cherry right now is 15' long 27" wide.  We also have Walnut, poplar, oak, wide pine, maple, english walnut, hickory and elm.  You can email me @ JoshuaLockman@gmail.com if you want more information or want to come by an see what we have.  We are located in Mullica Hill NJ, thats about 20 mins from the Walt, Ben or Comm. Barry.  We'll be milling tomorrow if anyone wants to stop by!

You can try our place- we sometimes get our hands on new lumber.  We deal mostly in reclaimed woods but have our own sawmill.
