Spike TV's "Framework" Show features Jory Brigham and other furniture designers

Thanks to Jory for accepting our invitation to participate on the forum. I know he has a nice following here, so it's good to see him interact with some of his fans.

I'm not sure he mentioned it, but on his blog he has chronicled his experience on the show in greater detail. So, it may provide you with a behind-the-scenes look what happened, especially since so much is edited out to make it fit within the time constraints of a show.

Jory:

I'd like to echo Shane's statement and say "Thank You for joining the forum".

I just finished reading all four pages of posts for this thread. I don't watch much TV (I'd rather be pursuing the FOG). I don't have cable nor satellite TV, so I have not yet seen the show, but based on what I've read - and especially the fact that you have been kind enough to stop by and respond - I guess I need to go search it out. I'm sure I can find it on Netflix or Hulu or something.

After I've watched an episode or two I'll be sure to post a positive comment or two over on Spike TV's website. Here's hoping that they renew it for you - if that's what you want. And I'm sure that your time is very precious, so thanks once again for allowing us to benefit from your talents and let us mingle with a celebrity!

[thumbs up]

Welcome to the FOG, Jory - Love your work.  Love the bow tie.

A few questions for you -

Both the hammock and the ping pong table were Walnut with sculpting.  Looked like you used a router with the large bit to do some of that.  Did you do the rest with your Rotex?

Looks like you work in walnut a lot - I really enjoy walnut but hope to see you exploring other woods as well.

Finally, how many hours per episode are you allowed to build?  Is it literally 24 hours of work time?  And finally, are all the series filmed in one series of days, or do you spread it out over many weeks like the show?

Thanks again for joining!  You do the craft and profession proud!

wow nice to see you signed up to fog jory! That last guy they kicked off was soo deserving, he looked lifeless and was totally not into the pressure of the builds. the duct tape guy was was  [blink]. anyhow grasshopper said it best, i really enjoy the show and look forward to it every tues.
Yeah, Craig didn't really seam to want to be there. I think the pressure really got to him. Honestly, everything we went through went against what any decent woodworker feels comfortable doing, like working too fast, being pressured to come up with a design in a flash, and cut corners. I was happy to see the last episode seemed to have shown a little bit more of the process. Hope that improves as contestants get sent home.

Jory,

I have to say it is cool to see you here on the FOG.  I sincerely appreciate not just the skill that you bring to the show, but also the class with which you execute.

You definitely bring style to the show, and let your work do the talking.  It can be pretty tacky when folks feel compelled to brag about themselves on shows like this, or in life generally.  You on the other hand, seem to know your skill and execute with a much more humble confidence, which is awesome.

At the end of one's life, the greatest project a woodworker builds is himself.  Your character shines through indeed.

Thanks for being a positive example in the reality TV chasm, and keep up the good work!
Thank you for all the kind words. Hope I didn't let  you down on the last one. I couple of the guys were getting to me. At times it was pretty tough to bite my tongue. There were lots of egos to deal with. I'm not sure if I could ever do it again.  Cheers!

So happy to do it, this stuff is totally fun for me! You can watch the episodes on Spike.com You'll have to sift through some drama but I just watched the forth episode last night and I think they're showing a little more of the process than the previous ones.(not much but everything counts)

How cool Jory! Thank you for joining up here. I love your work and have enjoyed the  show. Drama aside, there have been some excellent designs.

Was it hard to be on camera & away from the family?

The last episode was great.  You kicked some butt with grace.

I cannot imagine being thrown in the pot of those egos with unrealistic timelines to boot.

We will keep rooting for you Jory!!!

Jory,

As with a lot of other FOG members, I wanna say I really enjoy your work and I'm hoping you win this competition. I was wondering how you would interact with the other contestants since you seem like a chill guy (just judging from your youtube videos). Anyways, great to see someone who inspires us in woodworking get on a tv show and give Festool (our toys/eye candy) some air time.

Have you heard of Ellen' Design Challenge? It just started Monday and while its quite different than Framework, the first episode was cool.

Hey Neil.
I used the Rotex, then ETS for the finish sanding. Luckily I brought both with me. For the radiuses I used a Cushion sander. For those who are not familiar with that... its a handheld cylinder with a sanding sleeve over an inflatable bladder, which attaches to a dye grinder. Its one of my favorite and least expensive tools (unfortunately Festool does not make one.)
I love walnut, and luckily for me thats what they had to use during the show. If we wanted to use other wood we had to wait till the next day. My designs didn't typically allow for that kind of waiting. At home I probably use walnut more than I should:) I just love the stuff. Not only for the workability, but for the color. I find that I can get away with more dramatic lines and overall design when using wood thats not too busy. To me theres something so timeless about Walnut... Plus orange goes good with it:)
We were given 2 hours of design time + 24 hours of build time. That 24 hours was typically split up in 2 or three days. The 10 episodes took 9 weeks to film. It took about 5 days for each episode. Every week or so we would have to do "interviews" they were the worst!! You sit in a room and rehash each episode for hours.

Thanks!!

Oh and the bow tie... that was my wife's idea.

It was difficult at first but by the second episode you just dig in and forget about your surrounding and the camera. The hardest part was definitely being away from the family. Especially when you're surrounded by so much superficiality, you start wondering what the heck you're doing it for. All in all I'm glad I did it. I actually learned a lot and my wife and kids forgave me:)

The egos were tough to deal with. I tried my hardest to bite my tongue but slipped up a few times. I figured the more I kept my mouth shut, the less they would have to make me look the way they wanted me to look. I was actually casted for Ellens show, but Spike called me and after looking into Framework I thought It was more my style. I have not seen it, but from what they told me, I would be doing less building and more designing. I really didn't want other people building my designs since I typically design as I go. I'm curious to see it though.

Yeah I was pretty confused when they introduced dedicated carpenters for each contestant but ended up being happy with the episode anyways. I think you made the right choice too.

Btw I had no idea you were from the 805, what a small world. I noticed you were drinking an 805 in your Carvex review video and thought that was cool. I'm from Santa Maria (Orcutt more accurately). Cool to be from the same zip code as a talented guy such as yourself. Oh and of course, you're a TV star now too.

No way, you're right down the road practically. Funny enough we did that 805 thing as a joke, and it got Tyler, who works for me, and does great videography a job with them. Now him and his buddies do their videos for Firstone's add campaign.
Thanks for the kind words!

Well huge thanks to Wuffles in the UK for helping me get Framework on my laptop.
I have to say i really like it.  I don't like the idea that these guys are only given 24hrs to pull out a masterpiece but i suppose its the premise of the show & its the same for everyone.  Not seen the first couple of episodes but I'm sure they will appear on line at some point.
Jory, is the filming now done & you have to keep quiet about who won or is it still being filmed ?  Loving your work & look forward to the next one, the bed i think ?

Alan.
