Splinterguard on Holey Rail

The holey rail that came with my LR32 drilling set came with a splinterguard attached. I don't intend to use this rail for anything else. Is there any reason to keep this splinterguard on the rail. I sometimes like to measure to the edge of the rail. It would be easier without the splinterguard in the way.

There's no use for it other than the track saw.
So if you plan to use it only for the lr32 I see no reason why not to take it off.

Got to ask, if it's not getting in the way, what's the harm in keeping it there?  If it's the look you don't like, just slice off the visible edge with a utility knife.  Remember that the splinterguard supports the edge of the rail just as do the black friction strips.

Well, I see no reason to remove the splinter guard from the rail. If you do, the rail may no longer sit level as designed -- well, at least until you clamp it in place. That may not prove to be a major issue since you don't intend to run a saw down that rail. But, I still would leave the rail alone and NOT remove the splinter guard. Nothing is gained from its removal.

And you never know -- maybe one day down the road you chew through the splinterguard on your main rail, and it's too late in the day to go to the Festool dealer to get a replacement (or maybe there are none in the area where you live), but you really have to make this precision cut now-now-now, and suddenly you remember -- I can use the holey rail for my tracksaw.  That's actually happened to me, and I'm glad I had the holey rail on hand as a backup.
