Stairs

Complete this set of stairs a month or so ago. Framers had installed the stringers and plywood treads, I took it from there. The radiused bottom step is site built along with the scoria and shoe molding.

That's really cool. I especially like the double post at the top and the detail of the rail fitting to it. Awesome job. What is the finish of the rail itself?

Very nice.  I am a DIYer that built my own house and have a  similar post-over-post handrail, so I know how difficult this is.  In my book, finished stairs separate the men from the boys. I found Post to Post gives you a chance to correct an error, but post-over-post mistakes follows you the length of the handrail, and I fought an error all the way.  Mine came out very good, but very time consuming.  Could never make my living doing this.  Made my own runners and risers from rough kiln dry popular and also built my own bottom step.  Everything was doweled together, but my first attempt to use gorilla glue did not work.  What a mess!  Had to take it all apart, sand everything off, and start over.

Thanks! The rail is stained medium brown and will be a few shades darker when it’s done, they were still working on it when I took the photos. I have to go back to replace a Pella 3 point lock gearbox so I’ll probably take more pictures if it’s complete.

Thanks! The existing Pella door handle spring inside the mechanism either broke or weakened because the handle won’t stay horizontal, it sags down. The door set is about 10-12 years old. Pella sent us a new gearbox to replace the worn out one. I’ve seen a lot of newer decorative handle sets for 3 point locking systems that have an auxiliary or helper spring inside the decorative hardware to help hold them horizontal.

Thanks for that...I installed a Pella door and initially the handle was fine but slowly over the years the handle does sag lessening the amount of lock engagement.

As a 43 year locksmith, weak spring action is incredibly common, even in commercial locksets.  At least in those replacement springs are reasonably available.
