So, I have been away from the house for a few months(not the f.o.g.),and have a bunch of shows on tape.
Watching a few This old house shows,I see Tom Silva using the D.W gear that he is paid to show.
The D.W track saw that's throwing dust everywhere, ect.

Got me to to thinking about helping ol Tommy.
You see him using festool in other episodes and I know he spent his own money on them,so my question is this
How can I help him be able to use his beloved green tools?

Where do I sign? What say you all?
Lets help tommy quit using inferior tools [wink]

Be safe out there,Chuck

I had a good laugh on the last episode when they were taking the roof down and they had to show the DW cordless sawzalls.
Then a few shots later they had all corded ones of other species out. Lol
Having taken down my share of roofs/additions you wouldn't catch me up there with cordless ones.
Im sure that dw stuff would last a while its just not my flavor.
I'm in rhe market for a new slide saw, at H.D. the other day and just playing with the new yellow slider it was NOT smooth, I will gladly keep that $600 in my pocket until I get a kapex..

He had a Festool planer out the other day. There was a CT hovering in the background, and IIRC an ETS 150.

haha, actually the reason I even have festools is because of Tommy. Way back when they started showing up here and there on TOH i googled "black tools with lime green" and the TOH forums poped up asking what the tools were that tommy was using. since then its been a slippery sloap  [tongue]

If you look most times you can see festool somewhere in the shot. More times then not ill notice a stack of systainers sitting in the background. Also some shots of the trailer or truck there will be a few systainers back there. also when they are using the dewalt miter saw, especially during trimout there is usually a kapex in the background. :)

I do agree that tommy and the guys at silva brothers need to be using festool more in the show, Festool just needs to out bid dewalt!  [tongue]

I don't know the right answer, but Festool should be careful about this - it can backfire.  A while back before I knew better I started noticing that some Festool tools started showing up on TOH and ATOH and my local dealer had a fancy section dedicated to them and my first assumption was that this new company of unknown quality was involved in a big marketing push and that made me more cautious about Festool.  I don't remember what exactly convinced me otherwise.  My first Festool was the TS55 when I got frustrated when I needed to cut a plywood piece bigger than would fit between the fence and the blade and not getting a satisfactory cut other ways - the track just made perfect sense.

I don't know that show but when a tool brand sponsors one, it loses credibility in my eyes. You start to wonder whether they are using that tool because they have to by contract or because they think it's the best.
The example mentioned by tjbier is a classic, using a certain tool in a few close up shots, and then when they are really doing the work they are using other better stuff in the background.
It seems great that they slowly start to use Festools on their own initiative apparently without an incentive.

Believe it or not, over here there is a show where the guy can only use black n decker tools lol, he does great stuff with them but you can't help thinking that guy must certainly feel tortured since hes an experienced professional.

I think what makes TOH a little different from other shows is that the Silva Brothers actually are a contracting firm in real life doing real projects.  For those interested in some stories about the Tom Silva and Festool you certainly can do a search here.  Sponsors for the show are important to offset the costs of the filming and production which be huge. Of course it is a form of advertisement when a particular product is shown - product placement.  However, if the cameras aren't expected to be around the contractors will resort to what makes them money - hence the different brands.  Tom and his crews do use Festool products and there are multiple sets of tools.  Bob Marino remembers Tom if my memory is correct.

I am sure that many can remember the days of educational television (PBS) when there really wasn't any sort of advertising and there were more sponsors who did not have a product shown in the episodes but as costs have grown the guidelines have changed a bit.

Somewhere I have seen a picture of Tom and Christian at the Festool USA Headquarters Grand Opening gala but can't seem to find it here.  It might actually have been on a wall in Lebanon.

I am just stirring the pot,
We all know what tools Tom has with his own money.
It just makes me smile.
