I noticed Eli's latest entry for the "YOU KNOW YOU ARE A FESTOOL JUNKIE WHEN" contest...

...and that made me remember that I'd seen a "sawn-off" 10oz claw hammer for sale in a shop recently, where it was called a "stubby hammer":

Whilst Rolson tools are at the bottom end of the price scale (it retails for just 4.99 GBP), seeing this cute hammer made me laugh and I was sorely tempted to buy one! It is actually very comfy to hold, and might well make a useful addition to an emergency toolkit.

In the UK it is available from Maplin who are better-known for electronic gadgets.

Heh,heh. Unfair match.

I only trimmed 3/4" off, and it only weighs four ounces more! My framer. A real beauty. Magnetic nail set on top for up high placement. Straight claw for ripping apart forms, pulling floor nails in set walls, or bashing holes in things (not everything requires precision).

The price went up to $120 in the first few years of the 'desert conflict'. Titanium was scarce. It's dropped $20 again. But I bought at about $60. Don't like the full-blown Ti frame version w/ replaceable faces, to me it rings like an aluminum bat.

Not good for everything of course. But I also have a 16oz. steel rubber handle curve claw Stanley, a rubber mallet, a 10 oz. ball peen, and a brass mallet in the same Systainer.

I've got my eyes out for a Douglas 15 oz. hammer. I'd like one of those.

Hi,

I could see that little hammer being useful.  Even on a tool belt when you need to get into a crawl space or the like. The handle wouldn't be dragging and banging around. Also when in confined quarters and you are choking up on the handle of a regular hammer and the other end of the handle is hitting something opposite of what you are nailing.
In reality my prefered hammer has a hose on it :)

Well, if you want to get one locally, the claw version seems to be available at Harbor Freight in 8oz form, and there is also an 8oz ball pein version.

Fibreglass handle, just over 6" long, and $2.49 each!

I don't know why the ones in the UK are 10oz, and the ones in the USA seem to be 8oz  ???    Our hundredweights, tons and gallons may be different, but I think UK and US ounces are the same.

Need to buy this one for the new guys that are always choking up on their hammers. I always threaten to saw off their handles. THey get the hint. Along with knowing there off hand holds more than one nail.

Hi,

I was in a B & D outlet today :-[  and saw the stubby hammer. Black with red but otherwise the same. Almost bought one but then decided I just didn't know what I would really do with it.  I know were to find it if a need arises :)
