Suggestion - Festool Photo Archive

Many thanks! I've just uploaded the three photos I took for the recent thread about the modified TS55 baseplate, and all worked well. I just have to go and take some new photos now...
Forrest

Forrest,
Did you edit the TS55 baseplate discussion to use the new gallery for your inline links, or did you happen to use the "Insert Inline Links..." feature to do it?  If so, I'll remove those photos from the old gallery.

Previously, I used the Insert Image facility to point to a photo on my own website. Now that three of the images are in the Festool Product Gallery, I've modified that post, and combined the Insert Image and Insert Hyperlink facilities to point to the medium-sized picture in the gallery. Clicking on a picture in the post opens a new window and takes the viewer to the gallery, where they can read the metadata associated with the photo and also view a larger version of the image.

The code looks like

Code:
[url=http://festoolownersgroup.com/CoppermineMain//displayimage.php?album=19&pos=7][IMG]http://festoolownersgroup.com/CoppermineMain//albums/userpics/normal_TS55FrontLeft.jpg[/IMG][/url]

and the result appears as

(Try clicking on the photo)

I don't have an album in the gallery, so there's no need for you to remove the old images, but I'd be grateful if you could create an album for me.

Thanks

Forrest

Forrest,
Your post is a great example of what I was hoping to see with this new gallery.  I think it really opens up the creativity of our members.  My job is to get the feature up and running, and encourage people to use it fully.

First, the simple stuff...I added an album for you in the gallery.

Second, I think you raise an excellent possibility with the new gallery.  Instead of simply using the gallery as a source of photos to pop into our messages inline, we can use it as a real multimedia source (you can add sound and video into the gallery as well as images).

Creating a "linked photo" that sends the reader to the gallery image is a great idea!  To be honest, I hadn't thought of that.

For those of you who don't like technical stuff, ignore the rest...
I can create custom items in the "Insert Inline Image..." pull-down menu.  I worked out the wording of all the current choices, and I added the

Code:
[IMG]#[img]

choice.  I could create a choice called "Insert Linked Image" in the menu.  This could make it easier for members to do what Forrest did.  The menu item would automatically put the following code on the screen:

Code:
[url=#][img]#[/IMG][/url]

A poster would then just need to replace the two "#"s with the relevant addresses.

There are even more possibilities here, but I'd like to hear your response to this.

Stay in touch,
Matthew

Good luck with that!  ;)

Hmm, I wonder if there could be a competition to encourage people to submit photos to the Festool Product Gallery? Something nice and simple, like...

Anyone who submits five or more photos to the FPG by ____ will be entered into a draw.

Many thanks! I see it sitting there, and will probably fill it with pictures which illustrate my posts, but which don't belong in the Product Gallery.

I certainly like the idea of having a linked image, which takes you to the gallery (or somewhere else) when you click on it.

Personally I like the dialog box approach, as currently implemented for the Insert Hyperlink function. The user clicks on the Insert Hyperlink icon
url.gif
, and up pops a box asking for the URL. Once he enters that, up pops another dialog box which asks for an in-clear name for the link. After answering these two questions, the software makes up the code and inserts it.

So in the case of clickable images, the first question might be to ask for the URL of where the user should be taken when he clicks on the image.  The second question would ask for the URL of the clickable image which will appear in the post. Since the clickable image is essentially a hyperlink, its seems a good idea to use the same sort method that is currently used for the Insert Hyperlink feature.

Would that be implementable without too much bother?

That would be a great feature.

This is a possibility.  There is a feature that I can install that would allow me to create custom buttons, and assign BBC code to them.  I could, for example, create a button for "linked images" which would present the poster with a two-level pop-up: level one would ask for the image URL, and level two would ask for the clickable URL for the image.

I am always trying to balance adding new functions with keeping the posting screen as clean and clear as possible.  If I add more graphics-control features, I do need to think of how to keep the proper balance, especially if we have a combination of pull-down menu options and buttons.  Let me think of how to add the functions you're asking for while accomplishing this balance.

One thing I'm considering is grouping the image-control functions together on the posting screen.  That would help organize them.  You see what I mean?

Regarding copyrights: People should generally post their own photos.  If you're using something that's posted elsewhere on the Web, usually we're fine if yo just give credit.  If you're scanning something from a book or magazine, we should check on it first.

Keep the ideas flowing.

Matthew,

I caution against "If you're using something that's posted elsewhere on the Web, usually we're fine if yo just give credit."  If the submitter of a photo did not take that photo, the copyright likely still resides in the person who did or in the other site or some other assignee.  If you aren't sure you have the permission to copy someone else's work, don't do it for posting on FOG.  Merely giving credit to them doesn't trump copyright.  Other sites have been subject to legal challenges and even shutdown due to copyright violation, or encouraging copyright violations by others [think Napster and Grokster cases].  I'd hate see FOG become entangled in disputes over copyrighted photos or text.

Everyone,
Remember, the Festool Owners Group does not own your posts.  Members are responsible for what they post.  As a general rule, if postings or Gallery photos are in violation of copyrights, those postings or photos would be removed.
