Suggestions for non Festool extraction with RO 90

I'm considering the RO 90 but I'm sure it's the only Festool that I will buy that needs extraction and the Festool extractors, as good as they are, are out of my price range to purchase just for occasional use with the RO 90. any suggestions for adapting a smaller and cheaper shop vac type unit for this. I thought I saw threads on this but couldn't locate them.
Thanks,

Chris

whatever you go with make sure it's power is somewhat low considering that too much suction will cause pigtail marks in the wood.

Hi,

Pretty much any shop vac will work. You don't even need all that much suction.  One of the easiest ways would be to get a Festool Non-anti-static  D27 hose. The vac end will fit the standard shop vacs that have a 2 1/4" ( 2 1/2" ?, whatever it is ) vac port. Which is just about every vac out there.  You would not gain any benefit with the Anti -static hose unless the vac is set up to take the charge to ground, which is unlikely.

As far as the RO90 being the only Festool that you will buy that needs extraction ?   [laughing]  [laughing]  [laughing] Yeah right.

Only time will tell regarding you and your Festools and dust extraction.  [big grin] [big grin]  You can certainly use a standard shop vac and find an adaptor like a Fein hose end adaptor to get a hose to possible mate up to the RO 90.  But one of the keys to using dust extraction with the sanders is merrying the suction of the vac to the job at hand.  If your suction is too high, then you are sucking the sanding disk with its grit harder into the surface of your project.  You need to be able to adjust so that the vac is getting the dust but allowing the sander to float freely.

Perhaps you could find a blast gate type of apparatus to include in your arsenal that could increase of decrease the suction.  Maybe someone else will have an absolutely grand idea for you.

Good Luck!

Peter

OOPS.  Seth beat me to it!  [thumbs up]

Thanks Seth, I don't see a D27 , they are all numbers like: ZA452877 but they do indicate 27mm. Is the 27mm the size I would need?

+1

This is so true... Festools are addictive.

Don't spend much trying to work around this; it's a temporary measure -- you'll be back.

I have used a Ridgid shopvac with the Bosch Hose from Amazon until I caved and bought CT36 and then a boom arm.  For plunge saw and routers, it just is that much nicer and stays out of the way to the point I don't even notice it other than lack of saw dust everywhere..

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the quality and utility of Festool but I can assure you it's highly unlikely for me to need a Festool extractor. I'm not a pro, I don't do woodwork as a hobby. I mainly use tools for home maintenace and improvements for myself and a few friends and although I enjoy it and I'm pretty good at it,  I highly doubt I'll get more involved. I wanted a top quality, fast, small sander for some trim work and paint removal. If I go ahead with the RO 90 - it and my new C15 which I already love using, will probably be my only Festool purchases aside from accessories. My existing tools are pretty good quality even though they are not Festool and they are nowhere near in need of replacement - Now if I win the $50 million lottery tonight, I'll just buy everything Festool and give the other stuff away.  :)
