Systainer port

I sprang for the systainer port today (ouch), and I must say it seems well thought out and ruggedly done.  However, the instructions amount to pictures and I had to take the wheels off of the casters to bolt them to the bottom of the cabinet as I don't have a 17mm box wrench with a big enough "dog leg" in it to reach the bolt head with the wheel attached.  Also, I'm leery of adjusting the drawer heights the way the pictures seem to indicate, which looks to me like prying things apart initially.  So, I just put systainers that fit the prearranged opening sizes in the drawers.  Maybe someone on the forum has experience with this adjustment of the vertical height of the drawer openings.

I rearranged the drawers on mine and as I recall it took a little extra force to get them out.  Once you get the first one you'll not be so afraid on the next  :o

As to the casters, I was fortunate to have a wrench that worked.  Had I not had the correct wrench, these probably would have been a little difficult.

Enjoy your SysPort!  A thread here on security got me thinking about these...  That's one of the many hazards here in the FOG.

I initially ignored the instructions and messed around with them without much luck. Then went back and followed them and moved them about without any problems. But I used a small rubber mallet to provide the force to lift them out and re-seat them into the locking holes/slots. I have a helper to hold the SysPort whilst I bang about, it helps quite a bit. I have adjusted about 20 SysPort drawers this way. I have another 10 or so to do soon.

Being new myself to the site, where is the thread and do the Sysports lock? be nice on site.

I think the Systainers could end up being more addictive than the Tools... (that German site posted on another thread is amazing). Makes me question if the I work for a living or if I work for organizing my tools and buying tools.... If I was a better word smith I could make a good saying out of that.

The Sysport does lock.

If the sysport doesn't lock, what is the big key thing at the top for? ;D

Looks like it would just keep out a homeowner but not great for a commercial site, but they would be great to have around... $$$

Re the lock:  It makes it much less convenient to steal the whole kit and kaboodle.  It's easy to walk off with one systainer, but five in a rather heavy steel cabinet is another story.

There's at least one hole in the back, TT. You could sink a lag screw through the back into a stud and then lock the sysport.

Or use the SysPort rear hole for an eye-bolt and chain them to something solid.

Alternatively, keep a spare SysPort on site complete with spare Systainers full of bricks. Then whilst the thieves are trying to get that lot into the back of a truck, your Festools sitting in trash-can bags piled in a corner will get overlooked completely.  ;D

Sorry!

Hey Jonny, I notice that the SysPort in the photo you posted is without that little green button that releases the drawers.  Is this a new version, or another one of those NAINA type things?

I have absolutely no idea!

The button is found on the current version of the SysPorts. The earlier version did not have them.

You need to depress the green button to pull out the drawer. And you cannot pull out a second drawer until the first has been pushed back in place. These are safety features: so you cannot accidentally pull out to many drawers as to tip the SysPort forward on you, or accidentally have the drawers slide out (then topple the SysPort) whilst rolling it about.

I get the safety issue, but thought the locking bar in the rear already served in that capacity.  The bar is flipped when you open a drawer and is flipped back when the drawer is closed.  Why do we need to push a button to release the bar for opening a drawer --- I would have preferred that the keyed lock release the locking bar such that the green button would not be needed.  Sure, you might want to lock her up before rolling around... I guess it is a trade off.

Who am I to question Festool's implementation of safety mechanisms..... hey, but I will - I am not particularly keen on pressing the green button all the time to open the drawer, but I am getting over it slowly.

It doesn't seem to be a hassle to push the green button, but you need two hands of course; one to push the button and the other to open the drawer.  But there's a nicely rubber padded surface on the top of the cabinet to put your systainer on while you do this, and I find it easy enough.  The thing that's not so easy is justifying the price  :-\

Well, that little green button is getting more mileage here than the situation warrants.  It really isn't that big a problem, just a little inconvenient at times.  Green button or not, I am most pleased with these SysPorts.

And Rick, thank you for posting that modification.  I just might have to give that a try.
