Systainers for Hand Tools?

Hi folks,

I have a large variety of hand plans, chisels, and measuring tools looking for a home (I currently keep everything in their Lie Nielsen boxes, which are looking ratty).

Any hope in leveraging the mighty systainer to handle these types of tools? Yes, I know, my #8 wont fit :)  But my other ones will :)

Any links/pics with ideas would be appreciated - I did see one old pic with a wooden tray fit to stack handplanes.  I'm looking for other ideas, too.

Thanks!

What a coincidence. I am wrestling with this exact problem as I am going on a hand tool course 200 miles away tomorrow. I was looking at putting the diced foam insert (487 485) in a sys 1 or 2.

Take a sys 4 or a sys 5 and make a custom insert for it out of plywood that will hold your hand planes.

Or simply take my approach:

....but that might be less appreciated by professionals.  [smile]

It's not so much the heavy-duty and hard-wearing tools such as hammers that are the problem, but the expensive and delicate measuring tools. I really don't want my chisels and bench planes knocking around a sys 4 either.

I think the foam insert is the way to go for $15.

Funny you should post that Alex, i just dumped my old wooden tool box & put what i could in a Sys 4.  Looks just like that  [smile]

I really need to sort out some type of insert for it though so will be good to see what others come up with.

Here is a systainer 2 with a foam insert for the precious stuff. Then on top I managed to fit snugly (without squashing) a bench plane, block plane, card scrapers, calipers, dovetail saw and a set of chisels.

Not very heavy to carry and perfect for the weekend away.

Richard.

I thought that there was a Systainer that had a plywood insert to hold chisels and other tools.  I went to the Festool website but cannot locate the item.  Does anyone have a link to the item number or has it been discontinued?

You mean this one?    Wooden Insert for Systainer 4

It is actually a lot lighter than many of my tool bags fully loaded. It prevents you from cramming anything extra in or just tossing in stuff. My other tool bags and boxes always end up messed up in a month or so and always seem to get heavier from things I just toss in when I am in a rush :) I have one tool bag that is easily over 50lbs.

I bought the wooden insert this last winter and I love it.

It's my most used tool box now.

I had a glue bottle leak in mine so its permanently together now :(
