Table with a Twist

See JMB, how he put it in a vise, then just grab it and keep twisting.   [big grin]

Lol!

Well my first thought was he steamed twisted it but then I thought the wood would properly bend while you try and twist it! So it did cross my mind you know lol

I use a drawknife and spokeshave.  I'm currently working on an article for my blog due out this weekend.

You can get boards pre-twisted at Home Depot - no extra charge!

Just kidding.  Really cool piece.  I'm gonna have to steal, er, borrow that idea!

Jesse,

I have a friend who make a really cool coat rack out of an unbelievably bowed/twisted 2x4.  I want to make one but haven't found the right piece yet.

Sweet.  Now that is one unique design.  That twist really messes with my mind.  Nice work.

Awesome piece!  I could see this on the back of FWW with an article on the process...very unique and well exectued.

Thanks!

Jess, you're so right, but I usually find a lot of snack food at my local HD's aka pretzels --- really twisty wood with about 3 growth rings if you're lucky.

When I built my house in 1978 I bought every stick & shingle from my uncle that owned a lumber business.  His suppliers got to know the quality that he expected from his sending back partial and full loads of materials that he wouldn't allow his customers to have to cope with.  He operated his business well into his 70's and finally passed on leaving behind many loyal, sad customers.  When I walk around HD these days I just imagine how difficult it must be to build new houses today.  I don't think their sales people have any concept of how poor their product (much of it from china) really is.  [sad]

That is a wicked piece! Did you think about twisting the legs too?  [tongue]

I'm looking forward to the blog article.

Brad,

I didn't think about twisting the legs.  I just did it.

Good impulse, it just wouldn't have the same effect if you hadn't twisted them too.

Someone suggested trying square legs tapered on all four sides but not twisted.  I will probably do a test, but I think I prefer the twisted legs.  That's just the kind of guy I am.

Be carefull, you can go overboard with the twisting.  Twist everything & it could look like a comedy piece.  The way it is now in looks elegant with a hint of mystery  [smile]

UPDATE:  I just posted an article on my blog on how to make the TWISTED LEGS.  There will be two more parts to come as well on making the aprons and putting it all together.  Hope you enjoy the article.  No board twister required.

Very cool design and execution.  Thanks for posting the link to your blog.

Adds a very nice perspective to what would be a more basic table.
