Hey Michael,

I also suspect that it uses directional roller bearings or cams. What I really like is how easy and intuitive it is to reverse the "ratcheting" motion, or lock it altogether.  When I use the ratchet with my socket set, I always have to check which way it's turning.

Lee Valley sells the one shown at the bottom of the OP's photo.  They're designed by a BC company - did you know that?

I never heard of this company until I saw the posting.
