The coming Festool Flood

Things are bad.  Real Bad.  The economy I mean.  I've never seen anything like the fear I see now.  An armada of container ships outside Singapore with nothing to load, major companies announcing sales declines of 50% in a single month, well known retailers not just going bankrupt but forced to liquidate due to no financing (linen 'n things, Circuit City, Goodies).  Not only has credit frozen up, but consumer spending is now frozen.  And that's much worse for the economy.

So, just today, I log in to CL and find two different sellers trying to move six Festools.  I've seen increased activity on eBay lately too.  I think we will soon see a lot more Festools on CL and eBay.  Festools are a "discretionary" item.  Yes, they are great and I covet them..oh how I covet thou.  But substitute goods exist that will transform wood for a lot less money.  And, more importantly, Festools preserve their value. Consequently, it's one of the first things I would sell if I needed money because I don't have to take a big loss.  I see people all the time trying to sell a Festool for 80% of retail.  Sometimes, it's not even the current model.  Heck, for 20% more, I'd upgrade ANYTHING I own just to get the latest design and new warranty.

It will be interesting to see if used Festools retain as much of their original value during these difficult economic times as they retained under more normal circumstances in the past.  In my own case, I have not sold any of my tools, but I am not buying either.  I suspect supply and demand will soften the price of all products, new and used.

My prediction is that they will hold their resale value.

Like many others, I am cutting back my tool aquistion budget.  :(    But, I still have a tool aquistion budget.  :)

I've recently seen the following:

TS 55 - $375
ETS 150 - $190
Rotex 150 - $300 and $325 (one is definitely last generation)
OF 1010 - $315 and $325

Narrative says used once or twice or great condition etc....  Would these be considered good prices?  Personally, I think they are "fair".

A used once 1010 router just sold for $280 with free shipping on ebay yesterday (1/16/09).  I think that is a pretty good deal.  But if the market becomes flooded with used Festool products then the prices should decrease unless the demand is high enough to absorb a flood of tools.  Actually if you have the money and a place to store it now is a great time to be buying wood for the future.  Wood is way down in price and has been for over 6 months.

I know what you mean about things being bad.  Two of my 4 siblings are now unemployed or under-employed...  A brother-in-law in Calf. works for the correctional custody system and said they were being told they might not get paid in February.  Instead, the state was offering to give the employees an IOU...

There is not a lot of disposable income left these days so buying new tools is not high on the priority list...  But, the ironic thing is that I am now using my Festools more than ever...  Having a fairly large collection of shop tools already, it does not cost much to use them.  In stead of going out for a nice dinner & movie, we dine at home more often and I spend a lot more time in the shop.  Wood is not that expensive so it is relatively cost affective to just play at home...

By the way, I know what eBay is but what does "CL" refer to?

Matt,

I agree. I definitely see more shop time now due to reduced discretionary activities. I don't complain about that part. If it were left completely to me, all my discretionary time would be in the shop.

It would be nice to have a glossary of all the abrviations used... Maybe someone has already compiled one?

Here is one of the better Internet acronym finders:

http://www.gaarde.org/acronyms/

Unfortunately, CL is not in the above acronym finder, or in the other two acronym finders I have saved, or as a hit in Google search.

...so even the abbreviations can have context to deal with...
