HELP !!!

I thought I was in a good place .. planning something nice. Insulated, framed with inner and our skin (weatherboards). Gable roof (corrugated iron) at 30o and 900mm wide, 1100mm long, plus 400mm front verandah (decking timber) with roof over. Overall height to top of pitch 1200mm. Spare marine ply for inner lining and coat everything in a marine finish for protection.

If you're interested in the planned colour scheme .. grey corrugated iron, light blue weatherboards, white facia and detail, oiled deck (Merbau) and clear finish on interior ply.

Then I did the right thing and laid out the dimensions on the ground for my wife to "be comfortable" with the project.

What a mistake [crying] [crying] [crying]

BTW, the intended resident is an 8 year old labrador (Holly)

My wife wants it to be "much wider so two dogs can sleep in it" (news to me) ... but that throws all of the scale to the poo farm [sad] It'll look like a weird playhouse instead of a traditional kennel. I started to lose it when she said "I want the veranda to be a lot bigger too" [eek]

I know there's no such thing as a golden ratio for dog kennels, but I'd appreciate it if anyone could share their successful kennel build experiences.

Metric or imperial is fine [wink]

Ah [member=13058]Kev[/member], two if not eventually three clients for one project.  [eek] [eek] [eek]

I am sure Holley would like this one -

And yes Mitre 10  [eek] [big grin]http://shop.mitre10.com.au/diy/build-a-dog-kennelhttp://www.diyncrafts.com/10834/hom...uses-with-free-plans-for-your-furry-companionhttp://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/ho...d-mending/building-a-dog-kennel/#.VzrW8dQmKK0

WOW. With the exception of the large log cabin, with breezeway and kitchen for that horse sized pooch, my plans could be a little on the grand side [smile]

I like the upstairs balcony idea, but I wouldn't do it with Holly getting old. Great for a agile kelpie, but no good for a tubby old labrador!

Currently in summit, proposing a ~10% increase in overall dimensions and an extended veranda/deck as a separate section. The opposing party is standing firm, gesturing it must be "this much wider" (imagine my wife holding her hands about 500mm apart).

Thing almost went nuclear when I suggested that if we get another dog I could make another kennel. You'd think I'd just murdered love!

[member=13058]Kev[/member] made it large enough so that you yourself would be comfortable 'innit'.
;)

Kev,

One thing to consider - and possibly solve your dimension issues - is that some dogs really prefer to sleep alone  [eek].  Especially an older dog who is used to that.  Also with dimensions smaller houses are better in colder climates and larger in warm climates.

Good luck with the skirmish.

We've now reached the "just make it however you want" phase .. and as you know, that really puts ME in the dog house [sad] [embarassed] [crying]

Here is a link to information about sizing that is all over the internet (so it must be true  [scared]) :  http://www.callingalldogs.com/specsheets/choose_right_size_dog_house.htm

WOW. That'd be snug if you stuck to those dimensions. I'm probably being generous by about 30% on those numbers. I'm glad the point out the issue of a large centre door and no protection ... most people that make kennels get that bit wrong!

I was going to say, in the direction you're headed, you better size it for yourself, so you're covered either way.  :)

[size=13pt]So [member=13058]Kev[/member] , that leads to only one option, the dogs move in with Mrs Kev and for you and the occasional four legged visitor, I present -
