The math just got complicated

I’ve been using Scott brand toilet paper all my adult life.

BJ’s Club has stopped carrying that brand and I bought some Charmin’.

The packaging is different 32 rolls vs 36 rolls.

The price is different.

And this is the kicker:  The Charmin roll weighs 118 grams and the Scott roll weighs in at 178 grams.

So, do I pay Supermarket pricing for Scott, or Member Club pricing for Charmin which is 34% air?

(The things I worry about.) [big grin]

I wanted to make some potty humor joke but I decided that is not a good way to start out a thread.

You'd need to convert both brands to a cost per square inch based on the number and size of sheets in each brand, and then finally compare the weight ratio to find the better value brand.

I do this all the time, yes my life is sad!

The other factor of Charmin vs. Scott, is that Scott's will cause less plumbing blockages than Charmin.  There is more to it than just the cost per sheet.

In the UK, we all still use torn-up squares of newspaper hanging from the door on a string. Either that, or handfuls of grass. Why break with tradition?

I also heard that if you’re a gorilla, the best thing to use is a rabbit.

This thread also reminds me of an emergency call-out I one received from a customer who was experiencing smoke billowing out of her toilet. I showed up and immediately diagnosed the problem;

My favorite complaint about toilet paper value is that the rolls are now only 4" wide, down from 4 1/2" not that many years ago. How long will it be before they are made 3 1/2" wide, then 3" etc.?

Actually, 4" is adequate so that's not a real complaint. But a 7oz can of tuna is now 5oz., 32oz jars of Mayonnaise are now 30oz., etc.

So toilet paper is going the way of 2x4s. Or, if you shop at my local hardwood dealer, 4/4 lumber is dead-on 3/4"  [mad]

And a 5 pound bag of sugar is now 4 pounds.  And Haaggen Daz’ “pint” is 14 ounces.

Instead of toilet paper, they will sell “toilet thimbles”, the ultimate reduction in paper width.

I think that men can now be women and vice versa probably trumps all that!

What I hate is constantly replacing those new tiny rolls.

My supermarket also sells the Charmin in what I think they call the "mega" size.  Really, its just the size that a roll used to be.  I buy those just so I don't have to replace it as often.

A couple of notes on this retail nonsense.
Different major retailers specifically require manufacturers to send them different sizes of products than what the other major retailers in the area are getting. This requirement works in conjunction with typical sales advertising.
You've probably seen the ads from retailers, if you find a matching product at another store we'll beat that price by 10%, 15%, whatever. Well guess what you can't find a matching product because the other retailer has a 32 count roll versus a 36 count or Oz. or quantities, etc. The same works for TV's and stuff at major retailers.

It is amazing how buying rolls of TP or paper towels has become so confusing. Even if you go down the aisle at Target it can be a nightmare. One of the things I find helpful is to do the math on the package. Divide the square feet by the package price and you get a unit price. This allows you to compare prices between packages based on the square foot cost. You'd be amazed how often the sale package costs more per square foot than the regular package.

Same goes for the box stores with different product lines. I have a Home Depot and a Lowes within a block of each other. The Venn diagram of products in each has nearly no intersection except maybe Duracell batteries.

The do the same thing in the tool department too. Each carries different brands as their main ones, then a few pieces of the ones the other store has. The thing is that they are different somehow and have a different SKU. No direct comparison to keep from having to price match.
