The PLANEX si finally coming to America!

The launch will be March 1.

The PLANEX will be $1000 and the CT 36-AC will be $750.

I'll put them on my website by this evening and will be accepting pre-orders.

Tom

The Planex looks like a truly versatile tool. Home owners will love when this tool is used during a remodel.

Ahh, timing. I just started buying Festools to finish off a remodeling project. And my Father-in-law is also just finishing a remodel project. All the drywall sanding is already done.  [sad]

Maybe for the next one.  [big grin]

Should sell a lot of them since all this Chinese drywall has to be replaced all over the USA.  I saw it over a year ago at one of the Festool classes.  Awesome tool

Thanks for the this thread Tom.

I have been wondering of the NA cost and actual release date.

Fyi - the porter cable version works pretty darn well for those that arent looking to drop the big bucks.

Id say near 95-100% dust collected when using it with a Fein or Festool vac.  Ive had one for over ten years - wouldnt be without it.  I use it for the large areas and the RS 400 pad sander for the corners.

I love when old dogs say they do drywall so great, they don't even need to sand it... Yea right!

Ive used the PC version for doing repairs in occupied living rooms - its that good.

Not sure what Festool's gonna bring to this party for twice the cost...

The planex is a heck of a lot easier on you over long periods of sanding vs. the PC.

I too have the PC and it is nice, but the planex has way better balance the the PC.

The modular aspect is pretty sweet too.  Makes it easy to do a small room or hall way, then add on a couple more sections and reach those 14' ceilings.

The PC doesn't have this...

- Variable suction, controlled on the handle, allows the Planex to support itself using the suction from the vac reducing fatigue
- Modular design so it can be short for hallways, medium for normal use, long for high ceilings
- A robust, sealed 2-speed gear box instead of their cable drive which is more likely to fail over time
- A locking mechanism that keeps the hose from falling off
- Sealed switches and dials that can can't be infiltrated by dust, resulting in failure
- Switches and dials that are large and all within reach while operating the machine, right at your fingertips
- MUCH, MUCH less expensive abrasives lowering total cost of ownership
- A three year warranty versus their one year
- A removable brush around the pad that can let you get right against adjacent surfaces
- A rubber handle, theirs is plastic and gets quite slippery when you have dust on your hands
- And... even better dust extraction

That's a few things that come to mind. So, they are virtually the same except for price.  [big grin]

Edit - And, when I say cheaper abrasives, I'm talking about $30 for 25 sheets for the Planex versus about $20 for 5 sheets for the PC based on what I've seen.

Any word on Canadian pricing?

Don't hold me to it because I haven't seen it in writing yet, but I would estimate around $1,150 for the Planex, $870 for the CT AC.

Also looks like PC abrasive are a big donut ring vs Festool solid disk.

The ones I used were a solid disc. But they also clogged with compound dust very quickly. There's no extraction in the center of the abrasive on the PC, it's all done at the outside of the pad. With the Planex you can choose inside or outside the pad for extraction easily.

As a long time previous owner and user of the Porter Cable 7800 drywall sander, I can say there's a huge difference in features, quality, productivity and life span (guessing on life span, but I'd bet on it).

Julian,  if you got one in your hands to use on a job, I'm pretty damn sure your PC would be on ebay or the FOG classifieds faster than Nick's (Nickao/Dovetail65) tools last year.

Good timing, because I am starting a big (for me) drywall job in early March.  [smile]

And, I am sure that I would enjoy using the Planex.  [big grin]

But, I don't do much drywalling and don't really want to do much so, unless the a Planex is available for rental in the Toronto area, I guess the sanding will be done with my Rotex and Duplex sanders.  [wink]  They sure do a better job than the sanders I used in my pre-Festool days, so all and all, I remain happy  [smile]  but envious  [huh]
