I needed to make edge trip for a box I'm making. I'm using really nice ebony so can't scrap any. I placed the wood that I need to edge up against the saw blade and then slid the rip guide up against the wood. This gives be the correct thickness for the edging. I then slide the rip guide back to just in front of the saw blade.

The nice aspect of this trick is that it's easy to reproduce the thickness without measuring.

Does your fence slide fore and aft?  You can minimize the risk of kick back (or Kick-up) by sliding your fence back to where the blade begins the cut.

Or mount a sacrificial board to your fence that ends at the point the blade begins the cut.

I’ve never been hurt by kick back, but I ended up in the emergency room for kick-up.  Avoidable if I even knew there was something called “kick-up”.
