Thought I would run a poll to get a better idea from the members on their preference of type of time stamp that shows on a posts.  Both styles together is not possible.  Keeping the voting window short so that the forum upgrade fine tuning can move right along.

Would this be for the timestamp listed on each reply in a thread, or below the list of forums on the main page, or both?

When you post an actual timestamp, what timezone would it be for?  Would all times be converted to the readers timezone?  Would we choose one timezone for reference (maybe whatever timezone US Festool is located in?  maybe Festool Germany HQ? maybe Zulu?)  What if a reader is not logged in, what timezone should be used?

It would be for all instances where a date stamp appears.

The time zone would be Eastern US regardless of the member's or guest's time zone. Same, as it has always been.

But if you use the 'time offset' function in the profile 'look and layout' tab, it will show the time posted in your local time zone.

Thanks for this.  Didn't realize that was an option.

I think the 'variable' stamp, i.e. one hour ago, one day ago, etc. is useful if you are just browsing - i.e think social medai/

However, it's mostly useless if you're searching for something or want more exact data. Then I want an absolute date or time. For instance, if I search someone's stats - mine for example - it says that I joined 9 months ago. Uhhhh - when was that? But under my avatar in any post it says that I joined November 2013.  AHHHH!!! Ok, now we're talkin'!

I can see value to both in certain situations, but if I have to pick ONE the absolute is the only way to go.

Now - since I'm becoming known as a troublemaker anyway [thumbs up] - why can't we have a little of both? For recent posts, how about:

I'm torn on 1 month ago, but I'm leaning toward 'No.'

Everything else would have an absolute date/time stamp.

Whaddya think, Shane? Can this be done?

And another +1.

I voted for option one because over the years that has proven helpful in assisting with the administration and helping members out.

Thanks to those who voted. I think we have a good consensus and will leave it as it currently is with actual time.
