I still love all my systainers and sortainers but wonder whether or not part of the attraction is misguided and merely satisfies the OCD element that exists in varying degrees in all of us. (Apologies to any OCD sufferers if my analogy is a poor one)

Maybe........if you're OCD about being organised.

Festool isn't your girlfriend who you've just found out is shagging your best mate. It's just a tool and a system.

I don't think there is anything OCD about having a uniform storage system. That's just the nature of efficiency.

I like the ability to organise things into plastic storage boxes.

My OCD kicks in when I reorg the shop and move those little plastic boxes around and can't remember where I put the boxes....

The girlfriend analogy is a good one and it is a point that is well made.

OC and OCD need to be understood as two different motivations.

To me, ECD (e=excessive) can be a more concerning disorder than OCD.

Being obsessive isn't necessity bad and doesn't alway constitute a disorder. Excessive tends to be always bad by the very nature of it being too much of something.

The real big picture would look at the potential that we organise our tools, etc to exercise a level of control that we don't have over other aspects of our lives.

A psychology student could do a thesis on the weirdness that influences my tool related behaviour. [embarassed] [big grin]

Just for a point of distinction, do we consider something to be a "disorder" if we enjoy it and it causes no harm to anyone?

Those who don't understand why call it OCD -

Before the systainer came into my life I had already hyper-organized my garage...beyond what most would think is reasonable.  However I didn't learn it at home, I learned to obsess about it when I had my own manufacturing business where I stumbled across lean manufacturing (before it was know as that).  The epiphany came about year 2 in the business where I learned that optimized tool access/storage and minimizing movements and effort resulted in more of everything.  More production, more profits, more free time...more.  These concepts carried over into the home shop almost immediately.  Lots of well organized drawers, minimal shelves, and all tools should be accessible in as few movements as possible and always have a very specific spot.

After working nearly 2 years in home remodeling projects I found my home shop organization to have one fatal flaw - it was designed to optimize efforts within the shop and home remodeling projects were never in the shop.  Id gather up tools and carry them inside only to need a tool I hadn't grabbed yet.  Sure I went right to the tool in the garage but the excessive back and forth was killing me.  Then you gotta put that crap away because the wife doesn't want to see and walk around it all week just so you can do it all over again the next weekend.

I found my Festools to be the easiest to move in, around, and out.  I could bring in most of my tools in a single trip including a vac!  So here's the darn epiphany ---

If my shop drawers were organized, and they were very much so, then all I really needed to do to perfect my organization was to have some of my drawers be specific to function and be fully mobile.  The Systainer was just the perfect vehicle for such an activity.

I do refer to myself as OCD all the time but only to those who don't get it.

I'm not sure if the Sys4 Sort/3 is available for you in NA yet, but when they do become available I'm sure they will fill some of your needs.
I was really impressed with how much gear you can fit in each draw, in the photo everything you see in the top draw I used to keep in an empty sys1. draws are easy to take out and move around as well.

For a start off, its NOT OCD [mad]
Its CDO, cos that's in alphabetical order [wink]

Whilst I like having tools well organised I do see the movie assassin's guncase style things some people have made and think there's a huge amount of wasted space in them.

I think Scorpion read my mind.  I'm in the middle of redoing a bedroom.  Thankfully this time I can close the door and not hear from the wife as long as the completion date is before the furniture gets delivered.  Still, I don't enjoy tripping over all the misc tools I need.  And a discovery last week which will require more destruction and reconstruction will require more tools and more trips down two floors.  Plenty of wasted time, thankfully she doesn't pay me by the hour or I would get another earful!  A bigger 5 gallon bucket would suffice to cart everything upstairs, but I still want everything organized at the work site.

Personally, I never understood what was wrong with OCD. That means "Organizing and Compartmentalization of Details". Right?

I thought it meant "do it the right way".
