I think it's a German thing...

I spent some time several years ago consulting with Audi and they said that every car/engine combination was tested in a dozen or so of the harshest situations on the Planet, (Arctic to Desert and everything in between) for REALLY long, basically continuous periods before they would present anything to the public. They wanted to know the weaknesses before someone else told them.
