Here is the toy box I built for my son's 1st birthday which is July 26th! He is unaware at this moment, but he is going to be a Red Sox fan like me and my old man! And before all you Yankees fans chime in with the unusual cruelty and child abuse, the season is only half done and the Sox are only 6 back!

If he is only one, you could use it as a bed for a short while.

Nice job though, he will be very proud of it when he's older.

That looks great!!!  (Except for the Red Sox logo ;^)  )

Kidding of course but that is a great looking box!  Are the bases/baselines inlay?  What about the socks?

Cheers. Bryan.

I love the subliminal (maybe not so subtle) message your conveying.

Toys- good
Toys- Red Sox
Red Sox-good

That boys gonna turn out just fine!

Wow, fantastic box and being a New Englander you can NEVER go wrong with the Sox! I think he will hold onto that toy box for a long time!

Great job, a really cool project and something your son will be able to pass down the generations.

Beautiful job!  The best part of it is the heirloom factor.  What a great idea!

Sorry for the delayed reply, but the the "HH" logo is Redwood burl inlay. The bases are Holly, the base line is Peruvian Walnut, and the socks are Redheart. Yes, it is all inlay. Here is the sappy sentimental part I didn't mention in the first part. The bottom is false and has a hidden sealed time capsule of stuff that we brought him home from the hospital with. I wrote a future dated letter to him as well as my wife! It is sealed to not be opened until his 21st birthday! I did the same thing for my daughter's toy box at her 1st b-day a few years back!

Very nice piece of heirloom furniture, I'm sure your son will be proud of it over the years.  Now about those Red Sox - hope you enjoy the Panda that you stile from my Giants [wink]

Very nice work. Question, how do you ensure the lid will stay flat over time?
If you notice in the 4th photo where the lid is open you will see that I attached 3 battens to the top of the inside of the lid. Since they are in a cross-grain situation I drilled 5/16" hole thru each batten and then inserted a #8 screw thru the batten into the lid and used a 6x18 mm washer to catch the screw head. Once I knew that I had the lid pulled flat against the batten I then loosened the screw by about 1/8th to 1/4th turn to ensure that the wood can still move and contract seasonally! Since the holes thru the battens are way oversized it allows the wood to float freely with seasonal movement but still secure the flatness of the board!

The workmanship is awesome and should only look better with some age and some wear.  I think the time capsule idea is really great.  It'll be a huge kick for him to know that he had been playing and using the box for 21 years without ever knowing what was inside.  Awesome touch!!  That will be the true test of durability... whether or not the joinery holds up to abuse from a toddler without giving up its secrets!!!  [big grin]

Awesome work.  But I have to say it might have looked better in pinstripes. [big grin]
