I've been thinking about building cases for my 55" & 106" rails. On the occasions that I need to take them to a job site, I don't want them getting damaged in the back of my truck. My thought was to build something similar to the shipping 'crate' that the 106" came in. I would fasten 3/4"x3/4" hardwood to 1/4" plywood tops and bottoms and add hinges and latches to the two halves. I would add some foam inside to keep the rail from rattling around in the case. Anyone have any other ideas or pics of cases they've built?

I built one for the same reason. It holds our 55 and 118. I lined it with 1/2" dow. Couple piano hinges and a few hasps.

Nice looking case, Im interested in building one two, but I want something slim and slick for a 55" rail that I can toss in my truck

I put luan over the frame my 3000 rail came shipped in.  Then I hinged a 2' flapping door on the end of one side.  It can carry my 3000mm, 75", 55", and 32" rails.  It's light and I urethaned it  so a little wet weather is no big deal in the back of the truck.

That is exactly what I was envisioning.

I still have the shipping "crate" from my 106" rail, but really don't need it.  If anyone lives near enough to Noblesville IN that they want to come get it, its yours free.  IM me if you are interested.  I've been using it to store trim scraps from my basement refinish, but now that the basement is no longer a work zone, I've got to get rid of it!

Go to Askwoodman.com YouTube channel and pull up his video How to make plywood boxes 3 of 64. In the first minute of that video he shows the useful box he built to protect and transport his tracks.

Here's a simple box I made, currently holds 118, 75 and 55 rails. The frame is some .75 x 1.5 poplar pocket screwed with a glued on 1/4" ply bottom and the lid is 1/4" ply held on by 8 bolts and washers that thread into insert nuts mounted from the bottom. Hinged lid would be nice but wanted to keep this as thin as possible and not easy to accidentally pop open if a latch got caught on something. Didn't think lining the box was necessary as snug as they are, a towel between rails might be good if they slip over each other.
