Found a fotoserie about traditional german traveling craftsmanship and a tool one is using (related to this website): http://www.spiegel.de/fotostrecke/abenteuer-walz-ich-bin-nur-ein-armer-wandergesell-fotostrecke-128904-2.html

(The journeyman (german: "wandernder Geselle", Swedish: "Narver", Australian: "swagman", is a "tradition" originated in the medieval, when every craftsman who wanted to become a master in his handcraft had to travel around for 3 years and one day far away from his home, where he worked at foreign shops or for citizens and it was not allowed to spend money on any accommodation or transport (he had to hitchhike and sleep for free). )

ok, thank you. I thought, the origin of the word "swagman" is also a traveling craftsman.

Looks the same to me. Did you look at the photos [member=19746]Untidy Shop[/member] (unless you were agreeing and I missed that in your short reply).

Some blokes wandering around with a bed roll and some odd clothes. Sounds like the one and the same. No cork hats though.

If one of them turned up at my gaff looking like that, he wouldn't last long.

Ie. A skilled apprentice who is travelling to build sufficient experience to satisfy the requirements to become a master.

Swagman
A swagman during the two great economic depressions in Australian History [1890s and 1930s] was generally an unemployed and unskilled worker who hit the road to either escape misfortune or seek work. This life on the road for a Swagman has been immortalised in the unofficial Australian National Anthem - 'Waltzing Matilda' by Banjo Patterson.

[size=14pt]Looking at the life of a Swagman, I often smile when people rave about recieving a 'Swag' from Festool. I am sure they are not receiving a well worn bed roll within which are a few 'meagre' personal belongings.  [smile]

It was the flared trousers that sold me on them being one and the same. There has to be some cross-over given the history of the immigrants to Aus? Just less skilled during the depression as everyone thought they'd have a go?
