Hello,

I'm trying to plan my vacation trip in the middle of March. I do have several options, but it depends on local weather conditions. Internet has many info, but it's not very specific.
I do have two choices: one is go to Hawaii, second choice is go to Europe.
Could you tell me please how rainy is on Hawaii islands in March?
How cold/warm usually in France, Germany or Netherlands in the middle of March? I visited Spain and Italy, and it was comfortably warm (around +10-15 Celsius)

Thank you,
VictorL

Hawaii is a tropical paradise. It's always nice unless there is some big storm rolling through.

I lived in The Netherlands for a couple of years and there were about 20-30 nice days the whole time.

A few years back I  went to the Island of Maui for two weeks in September.  And it was in the 80's (F) every singe day  [thumbs up]

Also,  if you go to Hawaii you're surrounded by water, so make sure you want to go scuba diving, snorkeling or boating.

The volcanoes are fun too!  National parks are beautiful. And of coarse just about every resort on the Islands have Luau  parties.  [big grin]

The price of living on the Island is high.  We rented a Jeep Wrangler and gas prices were crazy!

Oh, and the sun was out everyday I was their.  Not one chance of rain.

Can you guess where I would go?  [wink]

it depends  do you want
a . a long boring holiday waking around in your shorts on a sandy beach with the warm sun falling on you . not a sign of rain, endless days drinking cocktails  and looking out at the deep blue see .

b. waiting endlessly for it so stop raining or the wind to die down. wearing several layers of cloths just to keep warm, loads of people speaking a language you cant understand, endless swisty roads.

i know where i would be. drooling over all the NAINA stuff

Forget Nothern Europe during that period.

Southern Europe would in the temperature range you mentionned, but rainy or cold or windy days are still possible: I've once been in Florence, Italy by end of February and I got a mixture of pleasant and pretty cold rainy weather.

Portugal and Spain are likely the warmer countries, because the nearby Ocean is warmed up by the Gulf Stream. while Southern Italy and Greece don't benefit from it.  I once enjoyed Lisbon by end February.

Anyway, plants are still exhibiting their winter nakedness by mid-march.

If you want to be sure of some warmth, better wait till mid-April/May (Plants are much nicer too) or go to Hawaii.

Hope you have a good weather and a good time wherever you decide to go

Victor, I wish I had your problem.... [tongue] [big grin]

Thanks for feedback. I don't like sit on one place and do nothing. On Hawaii I would like to see nature.  Volcanic park, forests, mountains and lakes. My biggest concern is rain season. It's not fun walk day long in the wet cloth.  Walking several days in layered cloth is not fun either. So I'm trying to find place where weather is around +10-20 Celsius (70s F). I considered to visit Istanbul then Greece, but Greece is a little bit not stable.

Greece is perfectly safe, I was there in Athens when some of the rioting was happening in front of the Parliament building you could see the smoke from the hotel.

still went to all the sights there were no issues at all and if you went to the islands then any problems are worlds away.

the weather would be bearable

gemany france and  the netherlands would probably be cold and wet..

in March I would probably head towards places like Madeira or Tenerife in Europe - definitely not mainland Europe.

Skiing is nice in Lapland around Easter if you're into downhill or cross country skiing. Definitely on the minus side (centigrade) there but usually sunny and not unbearably cold and dark any more.

Don't know about Hawaian rain seasons, but it was very nice at New Year a couple of years ago on the Big Island... Its always humid there and nothing will dry during your stay so a little rain there won't really make a difference - you'll end up with a wet shirt regardless.

If you've never been to Hawaii , you need to go just to realize how many flowering plants there are in the tropics!

If you do Maui , don't miss the bamboo forest in Hana .

I was in Hawaii sometime in the spring, can't remember exactly when though but it was very nice. Europe can be fine or not so great in March depending on exactly where you are. The weather in either isn't going to be horrible for me in March. As long as it isn't 20 or less, or 90+ I don't really care. Depending on how picky you are the weather will matter more or less.
I have to agree with someone else about deciding what type of vacation you want. I've been to Hawaii and other beach places. It really just isn't my thing for more than a couple days. Europe can be a lot of fun though. I'd go to EU. But then again you are in CT so that probably really sucks in March. Hawaii might be a nice change.

Generally march is still pretty cold here in the Netherlands. In the past we could still ice skate sometimes. I wouldn't want to risk my holiday that moment. But you never know. Last year we had a very warm march, we could walk around in a t-shirt and short pants outside.

Having been to both places, I would definitely recommend Hawaii..  I actually took a 10 day cruise from Vancouver Canada that disembarked in Honolulu.. Stayed 4 extra days there by the beach.  Cruise circled around the islands and was able to get a quick taste of all the different islands.  If you can take that long of a time off, I would definitely recommend this.  Ship carries you to the next destination while you sleep mostly.. first 3 days at see was somewhat boring but I had a chance to catch up on sleep so not much to complain there.

I've spent time in Maui and Kauai. Both islands are pretty much the same - perfect weather all of the time.

Because of the normal winds, they have wet and dry sides and the in-between that is commonly used for various farming.

I would suggest that you rent a vehicle that suits your type of activities. In one day on either island, it's easy to go from pleasant rain to pretty dry lava or from taking a dip in a waterfall fed pool to an ocean lagoon full of sea life.

Similar activities can also be had in the Virgin Islands and they are a lot closer to you.

Victor come to the Big Island of Hawaii. It is where I was born and raised. So many things to do here. The east side is wetter, but the west is pretty much always sunny. If you only go to Oahu, where Honolulu is, you missed out what Hawaii is all about. Got to see the outer islands.

Aloha,
Rob

Come to Normandy. It will probably rain, but you could check out a huge collection of Festools (over 30 systainers full at the last count):
www.rosayholidays.com

But to be serious, the choice between Hawaii and Europe is pretty radical. I think you need to try to give a bit more info to narrow down the choice. Sputhern Europe will be quite mild at this time of year depending where you go. Northern Europe will generally be cold and wet (Its cold and wet here in Normandy all the time!)
I'm off to New York this month - certainly not for the weather tho'.
Wherever you go, bon voyage.

What ever you do, don't go in late April.

"If you do not mind large crowds and paying premium prices for travel fares, then visiting during the peak, or high season (from mid-December through March or mid-April) may be the time to go. However, avoid these months if you prefer a less stressful, less costly getaway. The last week of April is also a high-traffic time due to a series of three Japanese holidays. This holiday period is known as Golden Week, and many Japanese tourists visit Hawaii at this time. If you also plan to visit during Golden Week, make travel arrangements well in advance."

Victor, I have never been to Hawaii, but my great-great grandfather was a Presbetarian missionary there.  I never heard any complaints from him about the weather. ;D

I have been to Europe (South Western Germany) in March with beautiful weather the whole time. No rain or snow the whole time.  For that vacation, the only snow we had was when we landed at Kennedy on our way home. There was over 6' and still coming down. By time we got home, there was nealy a foot of snow on ground and I had to go out plowing right away.

Our daughter went to Hawaii a few years ago with her ex. They happened to witness the rainiest period ever.  Record rainfall nearly the whole time they were there.  I seem to remember something like 30 inches of rain for the week.

You should not be phased by anything weather wise in any part of Europe. I think you might have seen some rather imposing winter weather somewhere along the line. I think you will find a lot of interest whichever direction you take.   If i were going to go to either Europe of Hawaii, I would pick Europe.  But that is just me. I'm just a hill billy, not a beach bum. If i would go to Hawaii, i would probably go into the hills or check out the agriculture.

Have a great time whichever direction you go.

No matter which island in Hawaii, there is a leeward side and a windward side to the island and the weather differs greatly depending which side you're on.  Maui for example.  Hana (windward) averages 9 inches of rain in March (which is little more than most of EU) Lahaina (leeward) only gets 4 (which is less than most of EU) you're likely to see a lot of sun on either side, windward has very quick showers.  The more beautiful vegetation will, of course, be on the rainy side of the island, so I wouldn't leave the windward side out completely.

When I graduated high school - man that was a LONG time ago - I went to the big island with my bicycle. Spent 3 weeks there tent camping in the parks. Met up with a ex military dude who was cultivating. Every day he filled a huge cooler with beer in the back of his El Camino and brought along a pile of his crop. Needless to say, I don't really remember much of that 3 weeks!! Loved the weather - quick shower every day but always really warm so didn't matter. As I approach retirement I hope, I would love to do THAT trip again.  [big grin]
