Triton going under?

Actually WRT the housing and sub-prime loan situation I think you have it flipped 180 degrees.  This problem was more or less driven by the democrats and some republicans wanting more affordable housing for more people to partake in the american dream of home ownership.  But instead of focusing on building more affordable housing the rules were changed not only to allow these bad loans to be made but to incurage the making of such loans.  Fannie and Freddie were then positioned to make the bankers feel more comfortable that they were covered if the loans did go bad.  Of course a good deal of greed on many players parts kicked in and they though they could just do anything and keep making money and getting richer and richer....and then the house of cards came crashing down.

I agree that we need much less government and to get government out of education, health care and other things where they drive up costs.  But there are too many people in government who think that Europe is the model and we should go more socialist as a country.  I feel that is where we will continue to head in 2009 unfortunatley.

Happy New Year...

Todd

Yes exactly the rules were eased up, encouraging these loans, that's my point.

They should have stayed stricter with tight overseeing by the government. The rules should not have been eased. They changed the rules to ease up because " they(banking and mortgage industry)" wanted LESS government intervention. Easing up on rules is not tightening up, but loosening it up.

And that is what they did they changed the rules to make it easier for cheating to occur. That is not government control when the law gets changed to make it EASIER. It's government getting out of it, staying out of it and no one had to follow any rules. We need to get back to the government watching these loans(banks and brokers) and tighten it up. It may hurt in the short run.

It should be more tightly controlled by the government. I am a Republican and am for small government, but not as far as banking is concerned. Banking needs to be overseen by someone in the government that actually cares about the people(if that is possible). Otherwise bankers and brokers rip off and do what ever the heck they want with these loans.

I think we are on the same page.

It is government control, actually government out of control...social engineering efforts and MBAs gone amuck.  The government pressed and encouraged making home mortgage loans to people who couldn't afford them, and allowed the bankers to prey upon people who did not realize how adjustable rate mortgages can later bite them.  Freddie and Fannie are creations of the government, too.  And the government repeal of laws that prohibited what the Wall Street bankers did allowed the size of the mess to grow exponentially.  Now it appears a majority of people are looking to the government to fix the mess and to sustain them throughout.  And of course, dishonesty and greed can never be eliminated by enactment of laws.  Laws can address some of the worst types of offensive activity identified up to the date of enactment of the laws, but people are clever and later invent new ways to be dishonest.  Government cannot change what is within a person's heart.

Yeah thats right Dave. No one can change whats in ones heart. I guess we keep picking the wrong people. Or do people change when they get in office and taste the power.

I still say let the bankers have less rules and they will just cheat more.

You can look at this as the government made these changes therefore it is the governments fault. But who pressured the Gov to make these changes is what we need to look at.

I maintain that when rules are relaxed and there is no oversight, that more cheating will occur and the government is the only one that can impose the rules we need in place.

So we better pick better people to represent us.. How else do we fix this relax the rules more? I don't think so.  :)

When friends tell me who they are supporting prior to the election, often times it's like they are picking the horse with the best odds of winning but not necessarily the candidate who will stand up for what their ideals are. It's a damn shame folks in other states were led to believe by a biased media that this inexperienced guy Obama, virtually unknown in his hometown Chicago, unvetted by his own party, whose limited public record showed he couldn't decide upon anything with reason or conviction in his short political career, wrote two life memoirs by the age of 45, was elected first to the US Senate on a political fluke and then less than two years later begun a quest that would lead him to become POTUS on a platform of two empty words, hope and change. Inconceivable if he were a white guy!

But Obama is our guy and our guy is in a tough spot. Our guy is literally unknown, had admitted his party had no core beliefs, his friends are a bunch of radicals, his wife is just as nutty if not more, he has just nominated the former cabinet of his rivals husband and the country is at war and falling apart at every economic seam. We didn't elect a president, we voted for an American Idol contestant based on sandy beach beefcake photos and an ability to read a prepared speech off a teleprompter! Half my fellow countrymen are on drugs and I'm left hoping for a miracle of sanity in an insane world.

Yes Woodenfish, we are on the same page. You said it well, what more could I possibly add.

You live in IL don't you?

I am on the other side of the world, and I agree completely. Obama & Clinton ???? A President who stands for nothing and a Secretary of State who will say (read lie) anything. Things are looking bleak for you guys.

In rereading this thread I think we are all more on the same page, but have different ways of expressing our thoughts.  I guess we continue to get to live by the Chinese Curse " May you live in interesting times "  Too many leaders in government and in business are caught up in the greed for money and power to the point of doing things to hurt their country.  I can't beleive that we are going to let Barack Hussein Obama take office without even producing a valid birth certificate, when you or I cannot even open a bank account without producing several government issued forms of identification.

Well, Happy New Year and lets get back to woodworking and Festool.  Sorry if I have offended anyone by pulling the thread off target but I get fired up over these issues when it seems so many people would rather just get a movie from Blockbuster and ride their couch.

Best, in 2009,
Todd

Todd, Nick and Woodenfish have all expressed themselves better than I am able, and I agree with what they said, especially Todd's recommendation that we get back to discussing woodworking and anything but USA national (and Illinois aka "Crook County") politics.

Is Triton going under?  Who will pick up their useful router and portable work support products and continue to make and market them?

Dave R.

I emailed my contacts at Triton USA....let's see what, if any response Triton USA can give.

Thanks Bill!
I am much more interested in what is happening with woodworking related topics than politics, economics, etc.  I would hope >99.99% of the other members here agree.

The word from Triton USA is that they are healthy and continue to supply product to dealers without any problems.

They expect to have a positive announcement this month.

That is encouraging information from my perspective.  Triton USA, IMO, supplies some very good and innovative routers for their price point and I assume their other products, while I have no personal experience with them, are of the same quality.  It would be unfortunate for the woodworking community to loose this resource so let's hope the announcement when it comes is indeed positive.

You'll know when I do, if not before.
