Actually WRT the housing and sub-prime loan situation I think you have it flipped 180 degrees. This problem was more or less driven by the democrats and some republicans wanting more affordable housing for more people to partake in the american dream of home ownership. But instead of focusing on building more affordable housing the rules were changed not only to allow these bad loans to be made but to incurage the making of such loans. Fannie and Freddie were then positioned to make the bankers feel more comfortable that they were covered if the loans did go bad. Of course a good deal of greed on many players parts kicked in and they though they could just do anything and keep making money and getting richer and richer....and then the house of cards came crashing down.
I agree that we need much less government and to get government out of education, health care and other things where they drive up costs. But there are too many people in government who think that Europe is the model and we should go more socialist as a country. I feel that is where we will continue to head in 2009 unfortunatley.
Happy New Year...
