TS 55 Sparking

Hi,

I've got a couple of TS 55's 110v's.

One of them (my newer one), is running low on power and is sparking "A LOT" internally. My other (older) TS 55 runs fine, no sparks what so ever. Alas, I can't see how to attach a video to illustrate the issue.

Comments appreciated.

Regards Paul.

The brushes might be near the end of their lifetime, you can get them as spare parts (11€ for a pair on TS55 REBQ, as an example). You can find the order number in the EKAT.

Assuming the newer saw has actually been used less than the older one, either it received a bad batch of brushes or some abrasive entered the motor and has fouled the brushes.

You certainly need to replace the brushes after doing whatever cleaning of the commutator may be necessary.

I'll open the saw back up, but I'm pretty sure the Brushes are fine.

As such, this potentially implies the possibility of a foreign body further into the saw. I did have the saw 'serviced' but it never worked correctly afterwards either, so I'm guessing the service included sorting the brushes out.

Let me open her up !

Not likely needing brushes if the saw is newer.

Typically this is a condition pointing to another fault.

Check to see if the brushes are free floating in the holders,  - could be crap in there or the springs not functioning or adjusted right.

Does the commut. shows burning ?

Got an amp meter you can put on it to see how much current it's drawing  when running?

If the brushes check out from a quick inspection - you're prob. going to have to warranty it cause there's likely an issue with the winding.

Who "serviced" it and what was preformed ???

I've not looked at the saw for a few years ... I just put it to one side and used what I 'thought' was my newer TS 55, working on the theory my older TS 55 was, well, just past it. Which is odd as I've got a lot of FESTOOL stuff and it all works fine.

It was serviced by a company called Selco in North Baddersly (near Chandlers Ford/Hampshire). However, I have had a few tools that have come back not great. I've since stopped using them.

I've just opened it up again.

The brushes move freely.

I could not figure out how to get the whole motor out. However, I do notice, as the saw starts to spin up, it does sound like their is some 'friction' on the motor, which sounds like it's coming from the windings. I'm not sure how to open up the saw to get to that however.

I've had all the screws out and been able to get the top half of the handle off and speed controller for the saw...

The housing to to the windings seems to lift a few mm, but not more.

antts,

It was in for a service to resolve the problem of, essentially low power - or changing power - which is still seems to have, it will spin up, then slowly loose some speed/power.

Problem is, I was so busy to resolve the problem completely - and now, well, I'm not as busy, so I can look at addressing the issue.

And so what ever he's done, but in reverse...

Watching the hole of youtube might take a while...

Jokes aside: Festool has a great service (and they, opposit to the 'service' you had it at, know what they're doing), so why not give them a call and get a quote?

Right... Found the problem.

I'll remove the offending dead bit, put back together and see if it works any better.

I'll have to look at the breakdown drawings as I can't figure out one of the springs.

Fortunately, I had another TS 55, so I could see how those springs went...

All back together. Not working, as I've stuffed one of the brushes. So, it's a replacement brush. However, the spindle isn't freely moving - but I think that's a brush problem. I'll strip down tomorrow night again and if it's spins free, then I'll order some brushes. If it doesn't, then I'm tempted to jump to the Mafell side...

I assume that's the casing/housing that held the bearing in alignment ?  Look like the service guys made a hash of re-installing the armature.  Is that bearing still good ?  Looks bent in the pics, but could be the lighting.

Paul, do you think that fan aids dust collection?
Or is it strictly for cooling the motor when it's all reassembled?

From the location of that fan, I'd speculate that's it's for dust collection but it could be playing double duty.

The fan is strictly cooling, and the airflow is toward the blade, not away from the blade, as you would have for dust collection. (The motor rotates opposite from the blade rotation.)
