Hi

I just purchased the 75 EQ and what a nice piece of equipment.  I would like to know if it is normal for it to sound like it's coming apart on startup.  Once it gets up to speed it sounds fine, but for the first second or two it has a grinding sound.

Thanks for any help.

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

I don't have a TS75 but I have the TS55 and had the same doubts when I first got it. Contacted Festool here in Oz and it was explained to me that it was the electronics and is perfectly normal to sound like the gears are shot (if it had gears that is) until it gets up to speed.

Hope that allays your doubts somewhat.

Mick.

The noise, which might also be described as "rattly" or "growly", is quite normal for the Festool TS55 and TS75. Unless warned about it beforehand, many new owners comment upon the unusual noise, and the subject is quite often raised here. Festool also have it listed as a Frequently Asked Queston in their FAQ database, and if you have a look at this previous thread from a few months ago, you'll see someone asking about the noise and my reply which includes the official answer from the Festool FAQ.

Dennis, the TS75 is my first intelligent saw also and I have come to love that opening growl. ;D I kind of liken it to my German Shepherd's reaction until he realizes its me and then he purrs. Well so does the saw when it meets the wood.  :o Fred

Fred,

I love your description. Festool should use it in their FAQs, especially since he's a German Shepherd.  ;D

The TS series saws incorporate a patented technology called MMC Electronics.  This technology protects the motor from overheating and other types of accidental damage.  It also makes sure that the saw runs at a constant speed while under load.  The TS75 also has a sliding clutch which prevents kickbacks should the saw blade get jammed.  Because of these many features which make the saw safer to use and longer lasting, it does not sound like most non-intelligent saws.

Fred, I also like your analogy.  ;)

Shane,

Maybe it would help if Festool put a short .mp3 file recording of the noise in the FAQ section, so new owners could verify that their saw sounds the same way.

It's definitely a disconcerting sound if you are not aware of how the saw works.

Nice idea Fred, I think I'm going to steal it and use it on my site.  ;D

Yes, good idea Fred.  Let me see what I can do.
