TS55 - How important is variable speed?

I also never reduced the speed for anything but once just to see if it made a difference and I soon Maxed it up again so I can carry on working quicker.

I would still get the top one if I was you because I just would even if you don't use the variable speed the brake is a good feature extra safety.

I disagree with waiting to place it down until the blade has stopped though it is unnecessary. I always place it down and slide it across the sheet out of the way even though the blade is still spinning because I cant even wait till the brake kicks in even that to me take to long lo.

Some people are just over cautious  in my opinion.

To win Mrs windy over, just make her something using the new Festool and when she hugs you and says thanks, you admit that that is why you needed this particular Festool - to make something special for her.  Eek!

I like your thinking. In this case the saw is necessary to make a pair of new bedside cabinets and some shelves. It'll still work out cheaper than getting then made, but I'm sure Mrs W wouldn't even think it possible to spend ?450 on a saw! (Easy to spend it on a couple of outfits for work though...

I have been over cautious since planing the  thenar of my right hand [crying] with a electric plane

I'm guessing this is a typo? What did you plane off? [eek]

The thenar muscle is the big round bulge at the base of the thumb.  It is hard and flexed when you touch the tip of your pinky with the tip of your thumb (on the same hand).  Otherwise called the thenar eminence.

I like that. It's exactly the way I go, and it yielded me a nice set of tools. Whatever it is, welding, plumbing, wiring, engine repair  or carpentry, I always got myself some (very) good tools and jumped the learning curve. It's cheaper, it's fun, and I learn something. If it failed it would be time to call in a contractor, but so far I've learned a lot. But even after hiring someone I would have pleased myself with a quality tool.....

A friend told me that a Festool is something you buy once in your lifetime. Because you don't need another. (I did need another set, I got most of it stole by burglary).
Because there might not be a second chance to convince your better half to buy yet another expensive tool that just slightly differs from the previous, bite the bullet now and go for the EBQ.

Best, CJ'60

hi windy and welcome to the fog.

we can only buy the ebq version here in australia.

i do use the variable speed quite often, for different types of timber.

i also use the ts-55 for cutting fibre cement sheeting with a diamond blade and always with a dust extractor.
i usually have the speed set at 3-4 for cutting fibre cement sheets.

i highly recommend buying the ebq version.

Thanks, Brice! I remember that now.

I was also told that Festool intentionally didn't make a diamond blade - to protect the saw. I'm guessing that one at Ideal Tool is not a Festool blade, but I could be wrong on that.

I got my first Festool product - a TS55 EBQ last year.  I've never used it on less than full speed, but I think the brake is worth the extra on its own.

Be prepared to 'discover the need' to add more stuff quite quickly; I think the CTL26 vacuum is just brilliant, and the MFT simply one of the best thinks I've ever bought.

Happy cutting,

Andrew

The blade looks like it says Festool on it and it has a Festool tool reward points assigned to it. However, I couldn't find it on the Festool Germany site.

hi tom.

i have never used the festool blade.

i use a generic brand diamond blade, they cost AU$100, compared to AU$250-AU$280 for the festool diamond blade.
Someone on another forum told me that the festool blade did not work as well as what they had hoped for the price, so they stick with the generic brands also.
