TSO Bigfoot

I almost ordered the TSO Bigfoot Domino attachment when it first came out but backed off thinking I wouldn’t use it.

Facing a monster project with a lot of Domino usage, I ordered one.

I am amazed how much I like this tool. The Bigfoot adds stability to almost any Domino drilling application.

I highly recommend the tool.

I was marking for mid-panel dominos for a bottom shelf (My table saw cannot do dados and I am hesitant to use my router for dados still). I aligned the shelf along the line. That is when inspiration hit. I would love to have a big foot with slots where it attaches to the Domino base, so that I can put the Big Foot on the shelf and the Domino on the panel. Sorta like an adjustable ladder on different stairs to make it more stable to change the light bulbs in the ceiling.

Other than the idea I had, I love the Big Foot.

What about a guide bushing for the router? I feel the same way about my Bosch 4100 Table saw. It’s a party wrecker.

I have one of these on my short list.  I see the possibility to make it way better, especially for mid panel work but for what I use my domino for it would work as is for extra stabilization.

This accessory adds stability to the domino joiner when fence registration is not used, but it is unnecessary for any mid-panel work , and here is why.

When mortising a mid panel, you only need to register against both pieces' reference edges with the edge stop dogs (paddles) for proper alignment. The middle mortises are cut with the narrow setting on one board and the wide setting on the other.

In other words, as long as the machine is held tight against the top board (shelf piece's endgrain, say), any slight side-way movement when cutting middle mortises won't affect the fit. The stability issue is non-existent in this case.

In fact, the factory support bracket or this kind of accessory shouldn't be used for mid-panel joinery because you need to remove it when mortising the endgrain board (shelf). That's an extra step.

I'm a big fan of TSO.  I own several of their creations and like all of them.  They are a niche player and are very nimble.  I hope they will be around for a while.

When I received the Big Foot, I found that unlike the Seneca Products, Big Foot did not have threaded holes for the 5 mm Finger Screws. In the interim, I put it into a ziploc bag. Recently a post noted such items are likely made from disapearium, likely too true to be funny.

Now I use a pair of 5 mm wingnuts when Big Foot hibernates.

An improvement hint - add two threaded holes "inside" the aluminum block for screws storage when not in use? Maybe even not through-holes, so the screws will not protrude ...

I know I would do that. Had I one in my shop.

I recently received one of these along with some other TSO goodies.  Mine a V2.0 and there are small O-rings in counterbores that retain the knobs.  Hence the axiom "always wait for V2".
