UK/EU recommendations for exterior eggshell acrylic finish

I've been using nothing but oil-based finishes for external work since forever. Legislation regarding VOC's (solvents) in oil paint, however, has forced all manufacturers to change their formulations, especially with regard to the type of oils and dryers they incorporate into the paint. Net result is white paint which turns yellow inside a few months when it's not exposed to sunlight - and that means door edges, window casement edges, frame edges and a hundred other things. Every manufacturer is now printing labels on the cans to warn of this. The only permanently-white alternative is therefore acrylic.

With a few upcoming doors to build which have all been requested in white, I now have to find a waterbased alternative. The favourite amongst UK pro painters seems to be either Sadolin Superdec or Zinsser Allcoat. Can anyone recommend any others? I'm looking for something which comes as close as possible to the long-term durability of an oil finish when subjected to our wonderful UK weather. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Either lurk, or sign up for the forum: https://www.painttalk.com/

They are very (very) strict about being a professional-only site devoted to painting.  However, if you make cabinets professionally, and they require painting, then that will get you past the wall.

They (the entire forum membership) know everything about painting.  I believe that they are primarily a USA based forum, but that is where all the experience with non-oil based paints is going to be.

I would sign up, explain your professional tie-in with painting and ask your questions.  You can also just do a search for information.

I did a search, “Non-yellowing white paint”.

You can take a look.  You can’t post your specific question until you join, however.  I did not read any of the posts, so I can’t say for a fact that they will answer your quesition.

Addendum:  I just read over a few of the threads.  I think you will have to join up and post your own.  They don’t seem to apply to your situation.

Happily, there is no cost to join.  You just have to present yourself as a professional.  They might even know of a UK equivalent site.  When I have a question about painting, I always head to this site.  A lot of specialized knowledge there.  I have not looked at if for a couple of years now.  But it seems to be much the same.

Good luck.

I was under the impression that water based, especially acrylic, is less likely to yellow than oil based.

I’d be interested in hearing what they have to say on the subject.

That's 100% correct - and the exact reason why I'm looking for the best waterbased paint  [big grin]

I'm surprised they didn't recommend Milesi.  (that's like the go-to gushing on Painttalk :P)
