I've been using nothing but oil-based finishes for external work since forever. Legislation regarding VOC's (solvents) in oil paint, however, has forced all manufacturers to change their formulations, especially with regard to the type of oils and dryers they incorporate into the paint. Net result is white paint which turns yellow inside a few months when it's not exposed to sunlight - and that means door edges, window casement edges, frame edges and a hundred other things. Every manufacturer is now printing labels on the cans to warn of this. The only permanently-white alternative is therefore acrylic.
With a few upcoming doors to build which have all been requested in white, I now have to find a waterbased alternative. The favourite amongst UK pro painters seems to be either Sadolin Superdec or Zinsser Allcoat. Can anyone recommend any others? I'm looking for something which comes as close as possible to the long-term durability of an oil finish when subjected to our wonderful UK weather. Thanks in advance for any advice.
