UPDATE:  I've added a picture of the final installation of the bambino component.  All of his edges are rounded over and smooth (as a baby's bottom) and the fit is just right!

I built a bassinet for my bambino who is due at the end of March. I built the entire piece out of solid walnut (besides the mattress support slats which are made of cedar). The joinery is compliments of Festool via Mr. Domino. Love this tool! The finish is General Finishes Arm-R-Seal in semi gloss. It was wiped on with a cotton rag and knocked down between coats with 0000 steel wool. At this point i haven't secured the cedar in place. If i choose to do so at all, i will probably do so conservatively with a few dollops of latex caulk or something of the sort. So, without further adieu, here are the pics.

Here's what i started with

I had to glue up the legs because i didn't have 8/4 stock

Thanks for looking!

Nice job, Nick!  Love the Walnut you got... some crazy figure in parts.

Just leave the Cedar sitting on the bottom; don't ruin your project with... 'caulk'

Nick, great job, good use of the domino.  Love the finish and the wood.

Very NICE!!!

Your design or did you buy some plans?

Love the walnut.  Excellent choice in wood.

Congratulations on the upcoming baby!

The crib looks awesome, I love working with walnut.

Also you can never have enough clamps!

thanks for all the encouragement!  it feels great to get this first project under my belt.

Eric,
it was my own design.  i drew it out in sketchup but still ended up making some on the fly modifications as i went along.

First off, congrats on the new bambino.  [thumbs up] I recently made a crib for a couple of friends and I know the feeling of having Mr. Domino handy.
The workmanship and wood choice is excellent. I have to agree with andvardi on the cedar. It can be problematic.

project looks great and congrats on the little one! i have to mention the cedar again though as i'm allergic to it myself, really just gives me a huge itchy rash so i can and do work with it but i wouldn't take no chances with a brand new wee-un.

neither me nor my wife have any allergies to cedar or really anything else for that matter.  however, i have taken this into careful consideration and if it does cause any problems, i have decided to use plexi-glass in place of the cedar.  it will be completely inert and non reactive if it gets wet (and im sure it's gonna get wet).  but honestly, i think given the buffer of the mattress, the waterproof mattress cover, and then the sheet over the mattress it will be fine.  i was originally going to use MDF or plywood as the mattress support, but then started reading about the formaldehyde used in it and immediately knew those were out.  i feel much better about the cedar but do have a backup plan just in case.

Brilliant Job !!!!  [big grin]

Personally - flick the cedar and go with open slats for air flow.

Modern child safe mattresses allow a baby to breathe even, with their face flat on them ... may as well give the mattress all the help it can get.

Beautiful.

I assume that by the time the baby starts teething then you will have moved on to a different one?
I'm not sure that chewing on walnut is so safe.

That really looks great, I personally would not have put the curve on the front legs, it just seems out of place with the rest of the job. But beautiful non the less. That walnut is A grade stuff.

You're right of course ... it' not safe - not safe for the Walnut  [wink]
