I had my clinical trial procedure yesterday, and I think I got the good stuff!!!!
Without going into TOO much boring detail, I was told that the study would NOT use a placebo due to possible risk to the heart, and that they would do most of the procedure but only verbalize and 'pretend' to the do the injection of the stem cells when they got to that point if I was in the 'unlucky' 50%.
Background:
I don't metabolize pain meds like 'normal' people. For instance, when I go to the dentist they have to give me 3 times the normal dose of novocaine, and instead of lasting for 2 hours it starts wearing off in about 20-30 minutes. They often have to 'shoot me up' multiple times to finish a procedure.
Also, one time when I had a kidney stone they gave me 42 units of morphine (!!!) over a 4 hour period - and I was still walking and talking. I'm sharing that information because it is relevant to what I am going to tell you next -
WELL...
They gave me what they thought was an 'extra' dose of Versed and Fentanyl, but I heard and remember everything that was said and was happening. I heard the pump run when they verbalized (yeah, right!) doing each injection - they did 18 injections total (I counted, and they confirmed it) - and I actually felt the injection a couple of times. (I just felt pressure, not pain.)
So, I am CONVINCED that I got the 'real deal' and am so excited that I can't even express it in words!!!
I will have an echocardiogram at 3 months and also at 6 months that will tell the tale, but I am doing the HAPPY DANCE!
OK, since I am sitting here in a hospital bed right now that last part is not entirely true - but the rest is.
[big grin] [big grin] [big grin] [thumbs up] [thumbs up] [thumbs up]
