I had my clinical trial procedure yesterday, and I think I got the good stuff!!!!

Without going into TOO much boring detail, I was told that the study would NOT use a placebo due to possible risk to the heart, and that they would do most of the procedure but only verbalize and 'pretend' to the do the injection of the stem cells when they got to that point if I was in the 'unlucky' 50%.

Background:

I don't metabolize pain meds like 'normal' people. For instance, when I go to the dentist they have to give me 3 times the normal dose of novocaine, and instead of lasting for 2 hours it starts wearing off in about 20-30 minutes. They often have to 'shoot me up' multiple times to finish a procedure.

Also, one time when I had a kidney stone they gave me 42 units of morphine (!!!) over a 4 hour period - and I was still walking and talking. I'm sharing that information because it is relevant to what I am going to tell you next -

WELL...

They gave me what they thought was an 'extra' dose of Versed and Fentanyl, but I heard and remember everything that was said and was happening. I heard the pump run when they verbalized (yeah, right!) doing each injection - they did 18 injections total (I counted, and they confirmed it) - and I actually felt the injection a couple of times. (I just felt pressure, not pain.)

So, I am CONVINCED that I got the 'real deal' and am so excited that I can't even express it in words!!!

I will have an echocardiogram at 3 months and also at 6 months that will tell the tale, but I am doing the HAPPY DANCE!

OK, since I am sitting here in a hospital bed right now that last part is not entirely true - but the rest is.

Not often that an online forum post makes me smile but I'm really happy for you Wayne. If there was ever a deserving candidate for that treatment its you! Your excitements contagious.

Wayne, that's great news!  I guess this necessitates  a minimum stay in hospital for observation?  Good way to start the new year!!!!

Gary

Awesome news Wayne- hope you are up and around soon so you can do the Happy Dance for real!  [big grin]

Thanks for the replies and wishes, guys. They mean a lot to me!

I hopefully get discharged yet this afternoon. I have to be careful of the incision for a couple of days, and stay out of water (no baths or swimming pools, but showers are OK) for a week. Other than that I have no restrictions.

I can't WAIT to get out in the shop and do SOMETHING...

Hopefully the good stuff leads to more good news about your health!

Well in my professional medical opinion don't do the happy dance too long for fear of tearing out the sutures!!!! Otherwise limit the happy dance to extremities only :D
Really happy to hear that Wayne, God Bless man!

Congrat's, Wayne!

Let's hope you don't get a baby's heart with them thar stem cells...

Tom

My prayers are with you for a full recovery!  Let the sawdust fly (right into your CT).

Great news Wayne, I am very happy for you, and know all will work out.

When in Vietnam, I had two infected wisdom teeth pulled with nothing as we didn't have any, no problem.  Returned to Germany, decided to have the other two removed, got the novocaine, and ended up with two dry sockets.  Now when I go to the dentist, I tell them to do their work without anything.

Great news Wayne!  Be careful while you are rocking it!

Peter

One step at a time, but this appears to have been a big one.
