Upgrade your MFT/3 with TSO's "MFT Aligned" Upgrade Kit - Launching 10% OFF

[member=59331]TSO Products[/member] - I'll admit to being distracted by another task today but, even so, the route I took to learn more just led to all kinds of confusion. I want you to succeed (!) which is the why I hope you can learn from my (uncharacteristic) fumble. :)

Looks very interesting! I’ve been happy with the way my old MFT’s work except when I have to change the height which requires re-squaring. It’s especially annoying when working with thick stock that lifts the guide rail beyond the height of any square.

Now there are two options to improve the MFT. Note that this one comes with an aluminum slop stop.

Hi Michael - do you happen to know whether the guide rail brackets on the MFT-3 are the same as the older MFT 1080 (which I have)? This looks like a great upgrade.

I was wrong about using this to upgrade older MFT’s.

Looks like this thing will end up being too high on the older MFT’s. The T slot it attaches is in the middle of the frame extrusion’s outer face, about 50mm from the table top. That slot on the MFT 3 is lower.

Maybe TSO can make a version for older MFT’s by moving the alignment studs and through holes a bit higher. I wouldn’t want the top cut off because we want the longest contact with the oem pin stamping as possible.

I watched the video this morning and was struck how much the oem plastic part was moving around and realized that on the MFT 3 it is attached to the frame rail close to the lower edge so it is less stable than when attached to the middle of the frame. Still, that weakness only allows more front to back movement of the guide rail pin and it’s the side to side movement that is the problem this upgrade is deigned to solve.

Oh well, I was hoping the TSO bracket upgrade would work for my 1080's, but it looks as if the only existing option is the Dashboard brackets, which I believe work with the older MFT 1080s.

For the MFT 1080 question, it looks easy enough to drill new holes here.  Maybe Hans can verify dimensions for you

puzzle about what is included . . . if you looked up the link in this FOG post announcement you would see a complete description.
This FOG post was announcing the introduction. We had not expected it to be a complete detailed description - except for a link containing just about everything a propsective purchaser may want to know.

I see we have to account what happens when we provide too much detail in the body of the announcement which leadss to readers bypassing the complete description on a linked and very complete product page. [unsure]

Hans, any plans to offer upgrades / replacements for the uprights, hinge and plates the guide rail sits on, or do you think that's overkill?

Thanks.

In the assembly instructions PDF is a view of the back of the front TSO bracket. (Don’t know if the rear bracket is the same) There are raised bosses that key into the T-slots in the frame. Those bosses need to be moved up to fit the 1080 frame.

I've come across in my whole woodworking life only one or two instructions for upgrade kits, and I must say TSO's use of color codes in the exploded diagrams is refreshing and instructive.

Has that approach been used in other upgrade products by other makers? I don't know, but that is the benchmark other merchants who care about the clarity of instructions in their user manuals should strive for.
it seems the only difference is the hook https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/festool-tools-accessories/upgrading-from-old-mft-1080/msg539645/#msg539645https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/festool-tools-accessories/upgrading-from-old-mft-1080/msg539645/#msg539645 reply#3 w/ pics

MFT 1080 owners:

we purchased an MFT 1080 extrusion to evalaute the possibility of adapting the MFT Aligned.

The differences in the extrusion require a specific MFT 1080 Aligned kit to produce the desired improvement.

The question for us: does the likely demand justify the cost of developing it?
We are considering asking the question in one of our TSO INSIDER newsletters. Keep an eye on your TSO email.

Correct. No modifications or tools required.
