Using a Tracksaw To Mill Lumber?

Is this something that would be practical? My brother-in-law is supposed to be getting a Wood-Mizer mill soon, so I was thinking maybe a tracksaw would help mill the slabs into boards more easily.

Is this a crazy idea?

I suppose the TS-75 would be a bit better, due to a deeper cut. Is it still enough? I'm not sure how thick I'd need, but it'd be nice to have a little extra depth.

I guess I don't even know how a portable mill works, so it may cut boards down easier than this method. But I know you yahoos on here would love to spend my money for me.  [wink]

I guess I'm just thinking out loud here, but has anyone ever used a tracksaw for this purpose, and if so, how well does it work?

Please and thank you.

Wouldn't work. A wood mizer will process the round log to planks. There is some vids on YouTube of them in action

I was thinking after the logs were processed into the planks, if the TS would more easily take the wide planks (36" or wider?) into 2x4, 2x6, 1x, etc. Or would the Wood Mizer do that too.

Basically, I'm looking for an excuse to buy a new tool, and would make my BIL more susceptible to letting me use it if I brought my tool to the party.

Sure that will work fine. And you are right the TS75 is probably a better choice.  I use the track saws to straight line and rip lumber all the time.

Your excuse has been furnished.  Get a nice long rail and go for it.  [thumbs up]

you will be able to use it to straightedge stock....and many other things you havent even thought of...a track saw broadens your horizons

Yep - cuts are cleaner with a track saw than using a table saw for most things. The TS75 will work great for this application.
